Getting in with Citi, AMEX and Discover

I could use some advice.

I have been trying to get in with Citi, AMEX and Discover. I have come along way since October of last year with a pitiful 570 credit score. I have gotten my TU clear and had my Experian clear but two previously removed satistified judgements popped back on my file. My Equifax listed the same two there and a paid collection. I do have a several new accounts and AAoA is about a year across the board. My utilization is about 12% and I do have several recent inquires in the last 6 months. Citi seems to not care about the baddies on there as they are over 6 years old but they seems to frown at the inquires. Discover is denying for derogs, inqs and recent accounts, AMEX is recent account, account age and inquires.

I figure that I can garden for about 6 months to a year and be in good shape for instants with AMEX and Citi, but Discover seems to be the most picky of the three mentioned. Any advice for them?

I would garden for now, let accounts age a bit, let some inq's fall off and retry. No biggie. Just time to garden

Re: Getting in with Citi, AMEX and Discover

you could let your accounts age abit....

but if you really want to feel lucky, you can apply for the Amex Delta Gold.... if approved, follow up with a Charge card.

or as everyone stated, let accounts and baddies age and fall off.

but i got approved last month for a charge and Amex Delta with a 640Ex score and i have 3 paid collections and a Jdmt still reporting on my Exp.

Unfortuately, I was denied on both.. Even tried just the Green Charge and was denied. AMEX is definitely barring entry for the moment.

With Discover, maybe have someone refer you.  You will both gets $50 for your trouble, but I think it helps.  My scores are nothing to write home about and I got instant approval and a great credit line.

Heres the thing...

INQs are a funny breed. First they carry much more sigificance the shorter your AAoA is. If u hav little history and are on an app spree (ie: thirsty for credit) it becomes apparent pretty quick. More established AAoA's dont feel it nearly as much BUT even then....

@Anonymous said INQs are @ the bottom of the list in terms of reasons for denial (unless the above applies). Its the other issues that need to be adressed (esp with Discover) as they can be difficult to gleen re: approvals with questionable history.

@Anonymous as U take a step back use the time to discern which banks are more INQ sensitive bcuz even @ 6mo's (gardening) they could still be considered fresh in the eyes of some (again, given shorter AAoA). Closer to a year may be better (just a suggestion). In the meantime manage the credit U hav (make use of your current lines) and keep your UTIL low. Dont focus so much on the card issuer just research good cards u need that will allow U to continue building good credit.

Best of luck.

BTW: The cards U hav now are all pretty decent.

Yesterday, I decided to call up Citi and Discover and the analysts I spoke to said the same thing.. Once my inquires fall off for at least the next 6 to 12 months and my accounts age up, that with my file I would have no issue getting an account with them. So I will do just that.. 12 months with no apps. I am currently in process to build and buy a home and we are looking to close in about 10 months. So perfect opprotunity to static my file and wait the 12 months. Thanks to everyone for the advice!

You have at least 6 new credit cards this month, 5 last month, 1 two months ago and 2 three months ago. And those are just the cards in your signature... All those new cards, all those Inquiries (and some applications may ave pulled multiple credit bureaus), plus all the inquiries for cards that you applied for and were denied...

You have obtained more credit cards in 4 months than I have in 40 months. And that includes cards that I've already closed.

With a large number of cards being from this month, and most of the rest from last month, you probably shouldn't be applying for anything for at least 12 months. And be very selective on what you apply for from now on.

I wouldnt be at all surprised if Barclays closes your $500 account from last month, once they see you opened at least 6 cards after theirs with over $33k in additional credit , plus IF they see the multiple negatives re-appearing on your credit reports. Same with Chase and the two $500 credit limit cards they gave you. It doesn't look good if you open lots of credit accounts and then creditors start closing accounts as well.
