Help! Looking for a 3rd card, but denied for almost everything

On the road to rebuild and I've read on numerous places that I really need more for card on my profile. The problem is, I keep getting denied for anything I apply for.

Currently have two Navy Federal Secured cards. 3% utilization on one, 0% on the other.

I've applied for: discover secured, BOA secured, Cap one secured, Cap One WalMart, Cap One Platinum. All to no avail. Sorry to provide context, I went through pre-approval for most of these and were denied so I didn't bother applying and taking the hit. The only two cards I've appliedfor were the Cap 1 Platinum after I was pre-approved, and the NFCU Cash Rewards cause I've been a member for 6 years so took a shot in the dark in hopes it would work out in my favor.

Everything I've read says to also stay away from the likes of Merrick Bank, Capital Bank, and all those sub primes.

any suggestions or is it best to just wait it out during my rebuild?

First, a comment on Merrick Bank, IMHO, they occupy kind of the middle ground between sub-prime and, for lack of a better term, near-prime; some of their cards are definitely predatory and sub-prime, others aren't all that bad.

As for your situation, if you've been denied for a CapOne secured credit card, there is something else going in, maybe too many apps in a short period of time.  If you can post some of the reason codes for your denials, that would help us give you advice, but, on the surface at least, it sounds like you need to slow way down, ride the cards you already have, and let things age out, possibly for as much as another year.

Hi and welcome to the forums

That's a lot of denials, so it would be for the best if you hold off on future applications for a while and focus on working on negatives, such as paying charge offs and collections (no idea what's on your CR since you didn't mention type of negatives)

Use your new cards to build some history, and let time do it's thing.

If you continue applying, you will end up with more denials, or even worse, approvals for fee harvester cards.

You have enough to start.

Also, when you're ready to work on those negatives, visit the rebuilding section of the forum for help.

Re: Help! Looking for a 3rd card, but denied for almost everything

What are the reasons given for denial?

Sometimes you have to take "no" for an answer and wait it out.

In late 2019 / early 2020 I did a 6 month app spree and was approved for a bunch of cards from BofA, Citi, HSBC etc then decided I needed a Wal-Mart card. Denied! What?  Denied for both the Cap One MasterCard and the store card. Tried recon but no-go.

This was a wake up call for me. I wasn't rebuilding and had good credit, mostly because I hadn't apped in years and paid on time. But Cap One and Wal-Mart didn't like all the new accounts.

So I stopped applying for a year. During that year I realized the Wal-Mart card didn't make sense for me anyway. I rarely order online from them and the in store cash back amount can be achieved with other cash back cards. In the end, I'm glad I was denied. It stopped me from applying for cards for a year, during which time I became more thoughtful on what cards would really benefit me.

If you are determined to have a third card right now your only option may be a card with yearly or monthly fees. Is a third card really that important?  A year from now with a perfect payment record on your two secured cards you will likely have your choice of several cards.

Re: Help! Looking for a 3rd card, but denied for almost everything

Greetings GTR206 ~ Welcome to the forum . . . I agree with others, you should consider not applying for additional cards for minimum of 6 months to 1 year . . . Remember that each time you apply for credit and it's a hard pull (HP), it reduces your credit score. One main and/or major issue is that multiple applications for credit cards or an application for any type of credit in a short period of time could raise a "riskier borrower" flag to the creditor.  So try to use your two secured cards responsibly, pay on time, build your credit relationship and allow your secured cards to graduate to unsecured!!!

You also indicated that you are "on the road to rebuild" but you didn't provide any details (i.e. current credit score, any negative item(s) on current credit reports) that our experts could review and provide some path forward action to successfully rebuilding within time. Wishing you the best in your rebuilding effort.

Starting FICO 8 Score in 06/2019: EQ-625, TU-649, EX-640
Current FICO 8 Score in 06/2021: EQ-796, TU-806, EX-812
Goal FICO 8 Score in 06/2022: EQ-825, TU-850, EX-850

Absolutely can do that. I only have two letters in front of me currently, so I'll provide those. This is from C1:

- too many recent inquiries...working on this. I had some random car lots running my information last year which accounted for probably 30 credit checks when I was not looking for a vehicle in any capacity. So that 100% makes sense, but something I'm working on.

- credit limits are too low (2K and 1K currently on my two cards, those are the original opening balances)

- too many chaged-off past or present credit obligations (1, paid in full, but of course doesn't go away).

- too many charged-off past or present revolving credit obligations (1, paid in full, but of course doesn't go away).

This is from NFCU for unsecured:

- not enough debt management or property owner experience (not a clue on this)

- high interest rate loan application (my financed vehicle...sh*t credit = sh*t interest rate, go figure)
- # of alternative credit lenders too high
- insufficient short-term/small dollar lending data.

Good to know about Merrick Bank though, I'll keep that in mind and appreciate that insight.

I do have a thread going in the rebuilding section if you'd like to check that out and provide any feedback there Smiley Happy

Also, for context, I didn't apply for those in the same day....nor even the same month...and some I didn't even apply for, I went through pre-approval. Just saying what I have been denied for. The last CC I applied for were both this month (C1 Plat and Navy Fed Cash)....the last time I applied for a card was over 6 months ago.

My fault for not providing that context which is rather key lol

Thank you for the welcome. I did provide context in the reply above, my fault for not putting that in the original post. I also have another thread going in the rebuilding section if you'd like to take a look at that and provide any feedback there as well. Smiley Happy

If you're getting denied with all these cards they are trying to tell you to pump your brakes, stop applying.  Let your cards you have age and try again 6 months-1 year so that your credit can age and improve.   Applying for more cards won't do your credit any good at this point you're digging yourself in a hole.

I get what you're saying, but actually running an application twice in a year can't be that harmful, can it? I'm learning sorry.
