Trying help my 71 year old aunt build a little credit and not sure which Bank Card to advice her to go for next.
She has a
Cap 1 card with a 10K limit open 8 months ago with $0 Balance
Amex card with a 3K Limit opeded 4 month ago with $900 Balance
Synchrony with a 4K Limit opened 3 months ago with $0 Balance
Clean, but thin report with a 758 score.
She charges and pay it off every month.
I was thinking about another Cap 1 account, but not sure.
Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Discover IT Chrome. 2% first year on everything (with cashback match), 4% first year on gas/restaurants.
Easy prequalification page. Easy CLIs for a lot of folks (SP).
Garden for another 3 months in order to get the AAoA up a little bit and show 6 months of age on the most recent card.
In 3 months have her apply for the Freedom Unlimited.
If she puts a reasonable amount of use on it, avoids going on app sprees, and continues to regularly PIF, within another 6 months there's a good chance Chase would also offer her a Freedom.

1. If it's just about building credit, she doesn't need more than the 3 cards she has.
2. In order to know what to recommend for a 4th card, one would need to know what her objectives are. Does she like cash back, travel rewards, low interest and fees? If cash back or travel rewards, what does she spend on, and if travel, would she want travel rewards points, or flat credits toward travel?

It's so obvious now... how about the AARP card.

Ya know, it's funny, but I have the AARP card -- and I like it a lot -- but I don't see anything about it that really connects to being older. It only gives you 3% on restaurants and gas... what does either of those have to do with being a senior citizen, or retired? If it gave you 3% at drug stores, that would make some sense... but it doesn't.
The reason for another card is that she is looking for a Visa card in order to shop at Costco. She did apply for the citibank costco card, but was turned down. I like the idea of her using credit cards vs cash. I just think its safer .
