Help deciding which card to apply for

Hello friends,

It's been awhile since I've posted here, just wanting some help if possible Smiley Happy

I currently have had the Chase Sapphire prefferred card for around 2 + years. It's a great card and I get tons of compliments, but I'm thinking maybe I should get a little more out of it. I don't travel often at all. I mainly really enjoyed the accrual of points as it was my first points card and the 40,000 sign up bonus.

I see lots of contenders out there, I eat out constantly, don't do much grocery shopping. I use 1 tank of gas per week. I go to movies a lot, and I probably spend lots online...unfortunately Smiley Tongue.

I saw a lot of people mentioning discover bonuses and money off, and it got me wondering. Maybe I should scrap my Chase card and go with another card, the annual fee for chase is probably a bit too much. I think I spend roughly 18,000$-20,000$ a year on my chase card(I always pay it at the end of every month), the only thing that wont go on the rewards card is my rent(apartment). Everything else always goes to my CC so I can maximize points.

Here are a few of the cards I saw that seemed good.

Citi Double Cash

Discover IT

Chase Freedom

Us Bank Cash+ Visa Signature

American Express Blue Cash.

Any idea's or suggestions or any additional information I can provide - just let me know.

Thank you Smiley Happy!

Re: Help deciding which card to apply for

Are you looking for one card or more than one?

Chase AARP might not be a bad choice; you get 3% back on dining and gas. You could get Cash+ for the restaurants (2%) and fast food (5%) and the another bonus category as well. Freedom/IT could work but how useful are those 5% categories for you and would it make sense to get a card with regular categories? I've heard Discover has (had?) a good online portal for shopping so that might be worth checking out (are you a big Amazon shopper or is it just general online shopping?). Citi Double Cash is good as a general spend card (or Quicksilver if you want a no-FTF card).

Quicksilver $10,000 | Better Balance Rewards $2000 | Sallie Mae $3500 | Freedom $3500

Well the freedom card will have a quarterly bonus on restarants x5 (until 6/30) , it will also have a quarter for movies (already past for 2015), another for fue (summer)l and amazon in the fall. Can get the bonus on the first 1.5k spent each quarter. Compare it to the discover it and see how the cateogories match up. If you are not using the csp to redeem with travel partners I would downgrade or cancel it. No need to pay the AF.

Starting Score: EQ: 714, TU 684
Current Score: EQ: 725 7/30/13, TU 684 6/2013, Exp 828 5/2018, Last App 8/5/17
Goal Score: 800 (Achieved!) In garden until Sepetember 2019

Re: Help deciding which card to apply for

I was definitely considering downgrading to the CS instead of CSP, but figured the others may be better or just wanted to know. I do buy from Amazon often, not sure how often I would guarantee buy stuff, but it would happen for sure.

I online portal with Discover had me very interested, out of the others.

Edit: considering 1 card, I've got multiple other CC's but I don't use them as often, Belks, One for Gas, My bank CC For SUPER low APR, and my chase.

Re: Help deciding which card to apply for

For the Gas, Online Purchases and Movies - I'd suggest Sallie Mae.

Sallie Mae Card by Barclays

You can maximize your 5% grocery bonus by buying fandango or amc gift cards @ your local grocery store - maybe even get some groceries while you're at it.

You can maximize your 5% bookstore by taking the majority of your Online Purchases to Amazon - which is coded as Bookstore.

Depending on where you live & what car you drive, the 5% gas bonus may already be hit with 4 trips to the pump.

Pair this with the already recommded Chase AARP card and you have a nice 1-2 punch. If you do indeed ditch your CSP.

Best of luck in whatever you choose!

Interesting, I had not heard of that Sallie mae card. I'll definitely look into that one. Groceries are rarity for me :<
