Help with Capital One CLI

Hi all,

I have a Capital One Quicksilver with a $5,000 credit line. The last CLI I received was in June last year. I thought it was about time I get another one (they have been good to me with CLIs in the past). I tried it on the website and they offered me an increase of $2,000 to make my limit $7,000. I withdrew my request, since I wanted to get a better CLI. I have a Barclaycard Arrival with $7,500 limit and Amex with $50,000. I expected them to double the limit or get it close to somewhere around $10,000.

I then called up one of the backdoor numbers and spoke to an account manager. I asked her if she can look at my account and give me a better increase. She said they are not allowed to do that and the only way to get a CLI with Capital One is by requesting it online. I asked if I can talk to a superior who might have the authority to override the limit given by the system and she said no, there's no one who can do that. Is it true? Is it really not possible to get a person in CapOne to look at the account history and determine an increase? If you guys know of any other methods, please let me know. Else, I will go ahead and accept the $2,000 that they are offering me, considering I still get that offer. Thanks.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

A 2k increase is 40% of your current limit. Not eveyone is like Amex who offers 3x CLI. I would have taken it. If higher limits is what you want, I would apply for a Venture and combine it in 6 months.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

They will not double the limit, sorry to say. Accept the $2,000 CLI. Smiley Happy

I agree with blazer above - a 40% increase from your current limit is a very good one.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

I agree it's a 40% increase, but I have better credit history now and other cards with higher limits. They once gave me an increase from $1250 to $4300, when the only other card I had was Arrival with $2,500 limit. That was a 244% increase. If there's no other way, I'll have to make my peace with what they are offering me.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

OP, I understand your point, but I'd take the $2K increase, as you stated. It sounds like unfortunately the chances of them going a lot higher are slim. The other poster mentioned the Venture card, and maybe you should go for that. I've seen on here that card seems to give higher limits.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

OP, you can wait for one more cycle and hit the button again. If Cap One wants, the computer can give a bigger CLI.

Unfortunately nobody in the entire customer service department has any power to change the credit line offered by the computer.

By Cap One standard, 2k is a very good increase. I never got more than that, whether it's the old platinum, the converted World Mastercard, or the Venture. Cap One doesn't do a proportional increase, and it doesn't match your other limits.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

Thanks for the response guys.

@Ghoshida I think my chances of getting a better increase might not be great if I wait for another cycle. I went ahead and requested a CLI and got my line up to $7,000. I will wait for 5 more months and give it another shot and hopefully get to the $10k mark.

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

2k is a decent CLI from Cap1. If you want a much higher limit with them then you're probably better off app'ing for another card. You can even app for another Quicksilver if you like that card, and then combine both cards into one in 6 months. Have you checked their prequalifier lately?

Re: Help with Capital One CLI

@JustMe3 - Can you have 2 of the same cards at the same time? I didn't know that. But I'm happy with the cards I have. I will check back for another CLI later. Thanks.

Absolutely! Some people have 3 or 4 Quicksilver or Venture cards. Venture tends to give a higher starting limit (and better CLIs, at least in my opinion). Many people app back to back for both Venture and Quicksilver so that they get 2 cards for only one HP on each bureau... just something to think about.
