High Starting Limit AMEX

Background:

  • Opened first AMEX (Green charge card) about 6 months ago
  • Since then, obtained two more cards, Platinum charge card and AMEX Cach Magnet
  • So a total of 3 AMEX cards
  • Was able to do 3X CLI for AMEX Cash Magnet after 61 days
  • Current Experian FICO 8 is around 770
  • AAofA is around 5 years
  • Several new accounts in the last 6 months
  • Less than < 5 inquiries in the last 6 months on EX
  • Close to 0% utilization
  • Pre-approval shows for all AMEX cards

Question:

Reading similar posts on this forum, it appears that there is no consensus as to which AMEX revolvers tend to give high Starting Limits (SLs). It appears it's 100% profile based and even cards with annual fees are unlikely to produce higher limits

Is this still the prevailing opinion that the SLs offered by AMEX are completely independent of products? Or are there certain cards that "tend" to "perhaps" give higher SLs? Similar to how some of the AMEX cards (e.g. co-branded AMEX cards) are considered to be slightly easier to obtain in the first place.

For information-- several cards interest me, including Marriott Bonvoy (promotion ends tomorrow). However, I am not set on any one and can see benefits in a number of AMEX cards, all depends on how I use them.

Thanks in advance for all opinions and any insight!!

Re: High Starting Limit AMEX

While I don't really have an answer to your question, I will say that when it comes to Amex (relative to other lenders) SL is far less relevant.  Why?  Simply because at 61 days one can usually get a 3X CLI on their Amex card, something other lenders simply don't do in the majority of cases.  So, if someone is gunning for a $10k SL on an Amex card and is "only" approved for $5k, in 61 days they can still be at 50% greater than their initial desired limit, possessing a $15k CL.

OP, it appears not much would have changed (AmEx-wise) with regard to the question (and responses) based on your thread from January.

@FinStar -- Thanks! So seems like consensus is still that limits are profile-specific only?

Pretty much the case.  The outcome can also vary depending on any existing AmEx relationship and/or history.

Re: High Starting Limit AMEX

Was your 3x cli on the Cash Magnet after 61 days with that card? Or was it prior to because you had the charge card already opened for several months?

@Wtrski413 - 3X CLI was 61 (or technically close to 70) days after getting Cash Magnet card.

One of the issues I am looking to apply for one more AMEX is because my score increased by almost 80 points since I first joined AMEX so my Cash Magnet limit (even after 3X CLI) is still low.

Thanks!!

Just food for thought, if your score just recently was adjusted and increased, I would wait another 4-6 weeks before apping.  It's not uncommon that the SP they use can still be a bit behind your updated score.

Re: High Starting Limit AMEX

Yeah profile is king with Amex. I know what you mean—how with some lenders it seems that there are certain cards that always give high SLs (Cap One Savor and Venture, CSR...etc). The great thing about Amex is the growth potential.
Discover It: 26.5k
Amex Cash Magnet: 24.4k
Fidelity Visa: 21.5k
Apple Card: 13k
