Welcome!
Reading your comments, I saw the mention of store cards, but no mention of Credit Unions.
CU's are great relationships to help people in many ways, not just benefits at "one" store.
If I read correctly, your spouse is a veteran. There are many credit unions both nationally and locally which value and cater to "our" group of society. consider opening the door to these opportunities as well.
Best Wishes!

Yes, I didn't mention CUs. I'm still looking but haven't found one we're eligible for unless we join the Consumer's Advocate thingy. I've been a member of USAA for years (through my dad) but have never done anything with it, and now I hear their customer satisfaction ratings aren't what they used to be. So I'm still looking. Besides the CU benefits, I'd like to move all our personal banking.
Thanks!
Well, I guess this question is going to have to be moot for a little while. A few days ago I logged on to PIF my Milestone card (50 bucks) and discovered a fraudulent charge. It was an online charge made to the University of Mexico. When I called to report it, they told me they'd seen that fraudulent charge before (which sounds like a data breach or company being targeted). Anyway, their procedure is to close the card and issue a new one. That process takes about 3 weeks and in the meantime I have no access to my new acct. The CSR told me I would be able to make it by phone, but he was wrong--their automated line doesn't allow you to get anywhere without an account number. So I haven't been able to make the payment. I faxed them the problem and got no response. In the meantime, though, they went ahead and did their monthly report to the CRAs. Didn't report me late, and it didn't affect my util very much, but they did report "lost or stolen card," and TU and EQ both decided to hit me for it anyway. 13 and 10 pts respectively.
Oddly enough, Experian raised me a point, same reason.
Doesn't seem quite right. I didn't lose the card or have it stolen, and I caught and reported it before I even got my statement. Seems responsible enough to me. Is there anything I can do about it?
Why is it that improved balances and payments get you 2-3 points, but someone stealing your number can drop you 10-15? That 13 pts at TU dropped me down below the magic 640.
Awesome Post DragonTears!
Yes, you should be able to do a Product Change with the Capital One Platinum to a QuickSilver, then you'd at least be getting cash back on that card...
Update: EQ raised my score back up (+1). Looks like they had not updated the new Milestone acct info, so they lowered because total cards/available credit had decreased. I don't have a current credit report for TU but hopefully the same will happen with them.
Just for fun, I re-ran the Discover prequal and got a hard offer this morning. I'm not happy, though, that the offered interest rate (after 12 months) is 23%. Is it worth doing for 12 months, and then trying to get the interest rate decreased? Do they even do that?

If I were in rebuild mode, I'd be all over the Discover. And, two things about APR: You're not going to get low ones at this point, and it shouldn't matter anyway. Carrying a balance on a rewards card negates the rewards.
Decided y'all were right, went for it, got it with $3k CL. Thanks for all the help!
Now back to the garden, for a few months anyway.
