I do have a strategy, though.
OP, It all depends on your profile and your credit goals. There is no max number, just what you can be approved for by the lenders.

Wow, that's impressive... i got 18 cards (+5 other accts), but it took me 14 months.
Not me but somebody on the forums recieved 45 cards in 3 years! Yes, average of 15 cards a year for 3 years!
Seven this year so far and a nice sized car loan!! I'm up for the 12 step program as well.
I can't seem to stay in the Garden. Everytime I get in and close the gate, I seem to do something wrong.

Thanks. It worked because I tried to figure out in advance which credit bureau was pulled by each lender so I didn't run up a large amount of inquiries on any one CRA. Plus, it helped to have a bit of cash to spread around. Deposit relationships with banks like Chase and US Bank got me pre-approvals for several of their cards; just last week different personal bankers at Chase told me I was pre-approved for any of their credit cards so I'm thinking of trying my luck for the CSR even though I'm over 5/24. The actual count in that nine-month period is 15 credit cards, 2 personal loans, 1 line of credit, and 20 checking and savings accounts.
I got about 10 in a week and probably 20 in a year a long time ago when I was really stupid.
I got 4 in a week recently and I am still a little concerned about AA.
I would think 1-3 per year would be little risk.
GL!
