I used a Discover invite and was told app is "Pending".

In all of my time bouncing through business ventures, there is something that I learned along the way. When you see that your application for credit or a CLI online is "Pending"... It means declined.No exceptions.

I finally bit the bullet and submitted an invitation code from the mail for Discover It, and when I was done, the screen just shut down and reverted back to the home screen for applications. I called. The rep found my app and said that I will receive a decision in the mail within 7 days, or I could check the status online in 72 hours. I replied: "Oh. So I've been declined." She said "No sir, I did not say that". To which I informed her that if I was not shown the happy screen of Congrats following hitting the submit button...that it means I have been declined. The rest is just bull**bleep**. You're either approved, or you are not. The only mail I will be getting from Discover next week, is the lame explanation for declining me. Which brings me to my point? Why send me shiny envelopes for years, and then when I finally succumb, I'm not approved? I don't get it. All my scores are VG to Exc and no baddies. I'm pissed because of the hard pull now, for no reason.

This is part of the risk OP. An HP (or SP on some cases) is part of that. Shiny envelopes are just that, shiny advertisements. They're not guaranteed approvals, but more or less a great marketing technique to draw some application volume. You simply fell for shiny.

As you've read lots of threads around these forums, not all applications are instantly approved.

Some applications can be queued for further verification (i.e. Pending), or may require additional information. Some can result in down right declines. Not the end of the world if declined or take it personal. If approved, you'll learn about that decision at some point and if declined you can always try again. The shiny envelope bites again!

Did you go to their prequalification site to see if you were pre approved for their It card beforehand?

I did indeed. I qualified for two in the capacity of which I was looking. Chrome and Discover It...pick your own color.
