Too funny. Upon posting my above question, Amex sent me a congratulatory email for approval and showing "member since - today". So I suppose that answers my question. I was hoping it might predate. Guess not. Oh well.

Once you have the card and have activated it, log in to your account and start a live chat. Ask the chat peep to look up your original date of 1990 and ask if they will update your card to reflect that date. Use the term "member since date", not backdate or predate. They will do it for you. However, it will only show on your card and on your Amex account. It will not report the backdate to the credit bureaus.

I'd prefer it keep the 2015 date on my cards and change my CR's to the 1990 date (LOL).

I feel like a fool for even bothering with amex now.

Received two pre-qualifications from Chase and Capital one. Applied for both on a whim tonight and was approved for both instantly. Hopefully this will allow me to build scores faster now that I no longer have to worry about my debt utilization on my the low limit cards I had been using for everyday purchases (I pay in full, but the statement balance was sometimes rather high). As an added bonus, I now have one each of visa, mastercard, and discover.

Congrats!

Re: I want an Amex card

I also applied for Amex last year and was declined.. Had cleaned up my credit(credit was mess!!) and purchased my first home in jun 2014. Tried and gave it another shot... I was dreading the seconds for the approval, thought I would get another decline but I was so happy when it came back as approved for $4000😁. I was so excited to be approved. Score at time of approval was 645 EX

I want one too, but it will be at least 2 years before it can even be considered for me...

Re: I want an Amex card

Continuing the story for those who said I had "no chance" at an Amex:

I applied initially a couple weeks ago. Was declined. Called for reconsideration (which Amex calls "manual review"). Was declined again. I then wrote a letter to the corporate bigwigs explaining that I wanted to be a customer and just hadn't been able to convince the credit analysts yet.

I received a call on my cell phone today while running errands, informing me that I had been approved for an Everyday Card. And that it will arrive in the next 1-3 business days via UPS. By the time I got home and checked my mailbox, the denial letter from the initial "manual review" was waiting for me.

Moral of the story: Never give up. Never surrender. Never, never, never.

Congrats !!! You went alot further than most, including myself. This has taught me to push harder next time I'm declined. Thank you for posting your experience.

Just added scores to my signature line. Many of the inquiries that show up as "hard" on my credit reports aren't really for credit-seeking behavior. I have four checking accounts (trust me, I had a reason for that), and each bank ran a hard check when I set them up. I also have a "hard" check from a background investigation. So my inquiries number is high, but it's not for the usual reasons. Utilization is 30% on one card, and less than 10% on two others. I have a personal line of credit with 0% utilization (I use it for overdraft protection).

Experian: 628 / Equifax 663 / Transunion: 678

Personal line of credit $300 (10%)
CU cash rewards MC $1000 (12.9%)
Discover It $1400 (22.9%)
Amazon Store Card $1300 (22.9%)

With a 628 Experian I'd say you have no chance at AmEx.   Once you get that score up go for the AmEx Delta Gold.  It's pretty much the easiest revolver to get... I got $5k in December as my first AmEx card with an EX score of 683.

Deogratias, your mileage may vary- my scores are lower than yours and I just got the AMEX DELTA GOLD with a $1K limit, and got excited and realizing that I have a hard pull, I decided to then try for the Chase Marriott and got that with $9K, then got the Discover with $6K and then I got greedy and tried the Chase Sapphire and was stopped in my tracks... I am going to garden for the rest of the year and try to get to 700 CS.  EX: 618, TU: 617, EQ: 645
