In-store Apps and Fraud Alerts

I was considering doing the Dick's card for my golf clubs since it seems like a good all-around deal.  It's not something I need, but I think it would be something I could use.  Anyway, I have a fraud alert due to identity theft.  How does that work if I app in store?  Is it possible for them to instantly approve me so I can make my purchase there?  By the same time, how does it work with a Recon?  I only ever applied for a card in person one time, and that was approved at a jewelry store long before I had a fraud alert, so i'm a little confused.

I do have a Sync card (through PayPal) already, not sure if that's relevant.

Re: In-store Apps and Fraud Alerts

If you have a fraud alert on your report, before applying for anything you'd have to remove the alert before proceeding with an application so that they can use your report.  If you leave the alert on and apply, it will be declined whether you do it in person or computer or over the phone.....

If declined, they don't do recon but you can certainly call to see if they can overturn a denial... No harm in trying.

Re: In-store Apps and Fraud Alerts

Really?  So instead of verifying my identity, anything I apply for would be automatically declined?

Did you freeze it also? -Seeking clarification. A credit freeze locks down your credit. A fraud alert allows creditors to get a copy of your credit report as long as they take steps to verify your identity. For example, if you provide a telephone number, the business must call you to verify whether you are the person making the credit request.

No, did not do any freeze.  Just a fraud alert through EX, and then they notified the other two CRA.  They asked for my phone number when noting that as well.

Ok, with just a fraud alert without the security freeze they just need to verify your identity after pulling your report.  If they are unable to verify, then that is when it results in a denial...

So they just need to verify which is NOT an instant denial unlike a freeze.  Thanks for the clarification.

Re: In-store Apps and Fraud Alerts

That's not entirely true..I had a fraud alert placed on my account last year and I applied for the kohls card in the store a month or so ago and it was approved with the fraud alert. The lady applied for my card on the phone though. Maybe this makes a difference.

Re: In-store Apps and Fraud Alerts

When I worked at sears and if someone had an alert we would process the application via register/computer. Then at the end when it tells us approved or declined we would get a message saying call X number for verification of customer. Then verification would go through the phone with the customer speaking and myself verifying license. So I'm assuming this might be a case of what may happen at dicks if you apply. So possibly just a phone call.
