I have a friend who is interested in joining DCU, but wondering if she should apply for their checking account as well along with membership savings account at the time applying for their membership....As much as possible she doesn't want checking account unless there is a huge benefit of having the checking account. Would you guys join this CU without having the checking account? If so then any reason for it? Tnx
I've come to find out that some of these FI will only work properly with a checking account. NFCU won't let you transfer money out through savings. I think I was looking at Bayport recently and they seem to have a decent savings rate, but only if you had their souped up checking account. Might want to do a double check on their terms for whatever product they were interested in.

do they just want the free FICO score? do they want their credit products?
there might be an extremely marginal 'internal score' boost for choosing to have a checking with them (if they aren't going to use it) for going for their credit products, but otherwise, I can't see why they would open a product they aren't going to use.
there is a $20 referral which requires a checking account, but I surely would not make the effort to do the requirements for $20.

Are there fees or something? Why not have both?

No fee, but I guess the person believes that applying for a checking account would cause a HP on Chex Report unless there is a hard pull anyway for opening savings account for the membership....Not she has any derogatory info on her Chex report, but she doesn't feel comfortable in having a HP on her report...So, she is trying to minimize the number of inquiries in there if she could...
You can finance a new checking account with DCU with a credit card for 1k. I just opened an account with them just for this. Was working on a SUB for a BofA Premium Rewards CC and needed 4k of spend (which I don't have organically). So a new US Bank business account for 3k to finance and DCU for 1k.
Oh, and by the way, you don't need to live in the geofenced area. You don't even need to join a group. When they ask if you live, work or have some connection with their geofenced area, just say, yes. And your in.

If one finance a new checking account with DCU with a credit card then it won't incur cash advance fee, or it would be coded as purchase? Also, it would be only a one time deal like at the time of initial deposit, or one could finance it more than once or other othan initial deposit within certain time like in 10-30 days? Any idea?
Also, if you choose the option that you are either residing, working, schooling or worshiping in their geo-prints then they will not ask for any documentary proof? I mean, you said that you have just joined this credit union, but what would happen if they would ever do review, even many years later, about your eligibility for joining this CU then do you think its worth saving just $8? Just wondering though....

Only can fund at initial application. It's always good practice to have your CC's set to the lowest possible cash advance credit limits. Use a good source for checking on which banks allow CC funding and any data on how it codes. Like here @doctor of credit.
