The minimum SL for the Flagship is typically $5K, so I don't know how that would be treated with only $3K left of the $80K TCL that Navy allows.

This.

Also, it sounds like this really wouldn't be a good fit for your friend.

Lastly, the AF actually ISN'T waived the first year. The SUB consists of 35k bonus points (worth $350 I believe) and a free year of Amazon Prime. No AF waiver.

Oh....I thought, obviously mistakenly, that AF for the first year is waived...Thanks for pointing that out...

With so little left before hitting the 80k ceiling, and NFCU will not reallocate credit lines unless you are doing a BT, maybe if they really want the Flagship, then maybe they could do a product change?

You are so right...Product change seems to be the only viable option for my friend if she does like to have this card in order to consolidate limits from other two cards, but she would need to forget about SUB, I guess....Thanks for your input.

Already having $77K in aggregate CL means that they would either have to PC one of their existing cards (no SUB) or see if NFCU would go along with a bit of handwaving by doing something like first decreasing the limit by at least $2K on a current card just before an application is submitted for the Flagship.   Technically it's possible to go over the $80K cap but examples of it being done without a later "oops we goofed so we fixed that" adjustment are rare.

Yeah...good idea to do it for the sake of science, I guess...unless there is a datapoint of anyone ever gone thru it....

Whether a card is valuable is purely subjective.

It does not sound like your friend would benefit from this card in any way.

You did put the nail on the head...She really doesn't seem to be benefited from this card except SUB...

@coldfusion, Spot on as usual ^^^^^^

I was going to say CLD first.

@Janneman,

The $49 AF on the Flagship is pretty cheap, compared to other AF cards.

I Would only do it, if needed the HIGH SL and could maximise the benefits of the card?

Fees

  • $49 annual fee1
  • No balance transfer fees
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No cash advance fees

Rewards

  • 3X points on travel2
  • 2X points on everything else
  • Receive statement credits (up to $100) for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓®
  • Plus, you’ll get a year of free Amazon Prime®3 (a $139 value)—on us.

ETA: Also would like to note; There are times that NFCU offers a 0% promotional balance transfer at the beginning of the year, that they don't always offer on The Platinum. But it is not guaranteed every year. Having a card with 80K CL and a 0% BT offer can be quite nice.

You are so right, but its just my personal opinion not to have this much limit on one card especially from the same lender if lender does offer to distribute full credit limit on their multiple cards...because if something goes wrong with one card then whole CL would be restricted. I was trying to get this card a few months back, but got denied even though I have only one card with them for many many years...but not interested anymore...but since then have been trying to raise my internal score with them thru pledged loan, CD, Money Market, checking, savings and direct depositing to pitch next card...

@Janneman, I can understand the thought process.

This is why I have a hair over 3 cards.

What works for Me, may not work for you.

I have at least a bakers dozen of high limit cards to fall back on.

Also Navy would send a replacement card via FedEx in a heartbeat.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Good Luck!
