Was in the store when the cashier told me "your preapproved" so I decided what the heck. Then I heard, congratulations your credit line is 300.00, what? Really? Macys 5k, Walmart 6k, Lowes 15k, Kohls 300? What gives? I then contacted credit department and asked for CLI the response was not enough credit in your credit file. Ummmm, ok. I have NFCU 40k, 25k, BOA 15k for years and years. What gives, why did I even bother? Will it hurt to just close it?
Won't hurt to close it.
Do you have any history with store cards? If not, that's a possible reason why you got a toy limit.
Kohl's has a pretty low MAX limit ($3,000 maybe??) and it takes time to get there.
Unfortuantely, existing credit limits don't have much bearing with some banks/cards.
With one exception that I am aware of, no one on this forum has a credit line higher than $3,000 with Kohl's. Every attempt for a credit line increase results in a letter stating "You already have the maximum credit line that this credit card type allows." As stated, a majority of us ended up with low startling lines of $300 even if we had plenty of 5-digit credit lines and good scores. Usually at 6 months, you can hit the CLI button and go to $700, then every 3-6 months go to $1500, $2500, and finally $3000.
The damage is already done. You have the inquiry for 2 years and the new account ding. Canceling the card won't make that go away and its age will still calculate in your reports for 10 years after closing. May as well enjoy the 30% off coupons if you do shop there and at least let it report as a $3000 closed line rather than $300 if you close it.
Isn't Kohls card is Charge and not Credit? Not sure if OP noticed it.

The name of the card is Kohl's Charge, but it's been a revolving credit card for as long as I can remember. Mine is new enough that it has always been Capital One, but my wife had hers probably 15 years before it even got sold to Chase (a decade or so ago) and it was always a revolver.
Congrats on the card. Kohl's is not a high limit card, and honestly $300 is still $300 and you have a chance to grow it. If you shop at Kohl's it could be beneficial, but if you want to close it, it won't hurt you. I do have to say if you go in with the attitude of i have higher limits like $40k on blah card, it probably won't get you anywhere. I have a $26k limit on my Discover but was approved for a $500 limit on my Old Navy card a year ago, which has grown significantly since then. It is what it is and i keep it for the benefit it gives to me when shopping at the store .
