It will only recognize your wife's son if he is a member. I used my dad's veteran status to join and just called in to apply. Was a very easy process.
Actually, I called this morning and they accepted my step son even though he is not a member since he is a Navy Veteran. We both (My wife and I) were approved for seperate accounts. Funny thing is... they never even asked his name, let alone a ss# or any other id verification. I found that strange. Kind of expecting a freeze on the new accounts to show up when that account crosses somebody's desk at NFCU.

I joined through my active duty son then my husband joined through me (they have different last names which sometimes causes issues). They never asked us for that info either and we never got a freeze, actually they approved us for a personal loan and GoRewards. Good luck on the job front, my husband does construction work too, but a different craft so I know how the jobs go.
Thanks. Knowing you didn't get a freeze makes me feel better. I still feel like it's strange though. Kind of seems like a loop hole people could jump through if they decided to be dishonest on the phone. I'd expect more security from a financial institution. Maybe they can see more than we think they can when they enter our ss#s and the family info was visible.
A little update here: I finally accepted a new position with a huge company making more money than I ever have. Ran up about $2200 credit debt during layoff. I could have gone back to work earlier but I held out for a good position. The day before my start date, I walked into my bank (BoA) to get a print out for direct deposit and was told I was preapproved for a card. BOOM! They gave me the cash rewards card with $1500 SCL. All in all it's been a good week. Just wanted to drop an update and thank all of the thread contributors. MyFico Forums has been a God send.
Congrats on the new job!
Congrats on the new job! Hopefully the $2200 can be paid off quickly. All in all, that's not too big of a load to have to take care off after an unemplyoment period.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the debt amount. My cards are still pretty new so I have a little over a year left of 0% APR. So I'm gonna pay them down slowly while I concentrate on paying off some baddies on my wife's credit so we can get a houses
