About me: Recently graduated in May, got a job immediately upon graduation and moved. I have no credit history besides my student loans, which total $35k. I do not have to start paying them back until March, but I am paying now to eliminate the interest before it rolls over to principle. I have a PayPal credit account which started at $1k and is up to $3k (too bad it doesn't report
)
According to CreditKarma, my scores are 687 TU and 660 EQ. No clue about EX, but it's probably similar.
Also according to CK, I've got a good chance for the Amex and Fair for the Discover.
When it comes down to it, the big sell on the Discover card is the 5% on Amazon for half the year, I do a ton of shopping there. But I also like to cook and buy in bulk, so I do a lot of grocery shopping. Gas is a big iffy thing, I don't have a car and so I only buy gas every once in a while for when people drive me places.
What're my chances for these cards, do you think? Is there another I should check out?
Well you have the same problem i have , i want that cards too or chase but creditkarma scores not real , not work , and is hard to apply when you not know your real scores , in my case i just know my transunion score thanks to walmart but idk my real experian or equifax.
Your scores from CK are questionable, to put it nicely. And CK is a marketing site, so their recommendations sometimes leave people frustrated when they don't get the card. Given you may not really have a FICO score, often this leads to starting with a secured card.
But you have to start somewhere, and that might be best with Capital One. They may give you a regular CC, but might offer you a secured card to start. That's common when someone does not have any other credit history.
Another alternative is to check with your parents, if they will make you an AU on one of their cards. The advantage to this is, you get the spend capability, and their (presumably) good credit history with that card helps your credit report immediately. Work the AU card for 6 months, then your chances for other non-secured cards, like the BCE, are much improved. During that time, you can also research other card options, and try to not be swayed by Credit Karma.
And while the BCE and Discover cards are nice, you really want to have a VISA or MasterCard also, because of the limits on where AMEX and Discover are accepted.
Yeah, I figured they were very questionable. I've been ignoring their recommendations and instead just looking up ones on my own, just included their recommendations for a reference.
I've read elsewhere that Capital One is very iffy on their acceptance -- is this true?
Checking with my parents isn't worth it. My dad's credit is absolutely awful and he has nothing for me to be on, unfortunately.
Good point on the Visa/MC thing, I'll keep that in mind.
Capital One is one of the better "first card" companies to try. They are likely to take a chance on someone with a secured card, and do not have all the ugly fees of CreditOne or First Premier predatory lenders.
Do you have a checking account? Which bank is that at? One avenue is to go in that branch and see if they have a starter credit card, or a secured credit card available for you.
Another sure-thing way to get a secured card is to go through State Department FCU. Set up a savings account, and then use that as security for their secured credit card. No hard pull for either setup, so you are assured of getting a card of some kind, which reports to the credit bureaus. Minimum $250 in the savings account, and you decide your limit. I set one up with $500 just for a project, a few months ago.
Bank of America is another possibility for a good secured card.
Do you have any suggestions for Capital One cards? According to their site, I'm supposedly pre-qualified for QuickSilver and Venture Rewards. Should this also be taken with a grain of salt?
I've got a checking and savings accound with LA Financial Credit Union, which does offer a few cards: https://www.lafinancial.org/site/visa.asp They were where I looked first, but the CURewards program is kind of awful.

Capital One Pre-qualify site is solid. Everyone I know was approved for the cards they were prequalified for including myself. You should definitely go for the QS and Venture. If you apply for both back to back it will result in one hard pull. But they do pull all 3 credit bureaus
Just an update -- I went for the Blue Cash Preferred and got instantly approved! $10k CL, which is uh, a lot more than I was expecting. Took advantage of the $250 offer as well, so that's pretty nice.
I'd suggest Credit Check Total.. it's $1 for all 3 reports and you can cancel during the first 7 days. Might be worth it just to know where you really stand. I wouldn't trust CK scores, they are never accurate. That site is good to use for updating purposes only really. Good luck!
