Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been wanting to get into the travel card game for awhile but I've been working on my credit. I'm ready to pull the trigger but CK once said I had great odds for a CSP but now it says fair, it is making me a little leery. I'll give you some of my info so you can tell me if it is even worth trying.

income: $50,000

Transunion: 754

Equifax: 752

Experian: 790

No late payments

CO Quicksilver: 0/1500

CO Venture One: 0/3500

Chase Ink BP: 0/10,200

Toyota loan: 14,000

Average Credit History: 1 year 3 months

Inquirys: TU:2 EQ:3 EX:3

You have your foot in the door with Chase (INK BP)

You have 1-2 years with your three cards.

You haven't applied for a new card in one year.

You're under 5/24.

Income seems sufficient, depending on other debts and total debts.

Your credit scores are solid.

Your inquiries are reasonable.

I agree ... signs are good for an approval.  Smiley Happy

But I also highly agree with @K-in-Boston  that many people apply for the CSP when there may be little fundamental difference between it and the CSR on a cost-benefit analysis.  CSR packs a LOT more value into that higher fee and it can more than pay for itself for many users.  Seriously consider both cards and don't be turned away by what seems on the surface to be a much higher fee.   You do have to be able to get Chase to approve you for the minimum $10K SL but they already did that with your INK BP and you're given them a lot of spend on that card.  I imagine you'd get at least $10K for a SL.

Some significant benefits:

  • 50% more value on all CSR spend if redeemed for UR portal travel; effectively 4.5% on all travel and dining out (instead of 25% bump on 2% or 2.5% total that you get with CSP.)
  • $300 travel credit applies to a wide range of travel charges from not only flights but also hotels, rental cars, tolls, parking, taxis and limos, cruises etc.  And during coronavirus, Chase has opened up charges for gas and groceries to count against the $300 travel credit, so you'll get that money back.  I've never had a problem getting $300 back in first few months after AF was charged.
  • Door Dash "Dash Pass" waives delivery charges and has $60 credit in 2020 and 2021.
  • TSA Global Entry or TSA Precheck, worth $100 every 4 years or $25 per year value.
  • Roadside ASSISTANCE pays for first $50 up to 4x per year, so not the simple "Roadside DISPATCH" offered by other cards that just helps you find service but doesn't pay anything towards it. (Worth about the value of basic AAA, or $50 per year plus.)
  • Priority Pass Lounges when you fly.
  • MUCH better overall travel protections and insurance than most travel cards, including the CSP.  Up to $1 Million AD&D.  Baggage delay or loss.  Trip delay or cancellation.  Primary car insurance like the CSP, and included in the AF unlike AMEX.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

It appears to me your chances are good...but Chase will make the final decision Smiley Happy . You should get the card only if you plan to take advantage of the SUB ($4,000 in the first 3 months) otherwise you'll lose out on that. Not sure when the pandemic will be over, but few people are travelling. So not sure spending $550 for a card that can't be used to its full potential is a good idea right now...but I have an aversion to any card with any AF.

Same here... I don't want to feel compelled to meet a spending quota in order to justify the annual fee. I prefer no AF, even if theoretically my spending justifies the AF... I just don't want to deal with it.

Travel cards are messy at best in the current environment, with travel not really being a thing that happens anymore. That is a serious consideration when looking at these cards right now.

I don't understand your points.

OP clearly stated their spend on personal cards is up to $2000.00 per month, and that they are maxing Ink ($10,000.00) monthly.

$4000 should be a walk in the park with average $12,000.00 monthly spend.

URs do not expire,  so that's not a concern either.

Didn't happen, I tried and said I would get a reason in 7-10 days. Now trying to figure out if I should try anything else since credit got pulled. *sigh*

The first ever rejection sucks. 😂

Re: Looking to get a CSP.

That's quite surprising.  Call the Chase reconsideration line at 1-888-270-2127; can't hurt at all and definitely mention your current spending on your other card.

It's not over, it could still be verification.

While they aren't willing to entertain approvals when applicant is over 5/24,other reasons seem to be a bit more negotiable.

You can wait for the letter if it's really a denial, that way you will be ready because you only get one try, or you could call on Monday and try it that way.

Their UW aren't chatty, be ready to describe past lives, favorite galaxies, explain how you feel about Navier-Stokes equations, but it can be done.

I'd wait for the letter, because HUCA doesn't work with them any longer.

Subsequent reps would just read first one's notes, so you gotta make it count.

You can do it!

Last time I saw weird denial like this, it wasn't denial but a request for income verification, which might be a possibility in your case given the high spend on business card

Good luck!

I hadn't even read that development.  In the not-too-distant past, people could HUCA until they gave up or got a "yes."  Good info to note!
