@Gunnerboy wrote:OP, in 2018 I applied for the flagship immediately after joining, and was declined due to not meeting minimum credit line, per the denial letter that would come in the mail about four days later. Flagship has a minimum SL $5,000.
On the second day, I was inst-approved for GoRewards with an SL of $4,800, so I was just $200 shy of qualifying for the flagship. I could have reconn'd had I known how close I was to qualifying for the flagship, I guess.
I would also add that I initially went for the Flagship after gaining membership and I was denied. I then apped for the Cash Rewards and was instantly approved for $10k and received a Visa signature. I waited my 91/3 and got a $8k CLI for the CR and apped for the Flagship again. This time I was rewarded with an instant approval for $25K. I've since closed the CR and combined it with the Flagship. Anyway, what I'm getting at is it's not always so easy to get the Flagship on the first shot. For others (myself included), the second times the charm.

You didn't give your stats -- did your credit profile look as good as the OPs?
There have been people with 800s who had to start with a $1K card with NFCU. If it were me, I would just go for any other card and go for Flagship at 91/3.

Fair enough. My profile is similar to the original poster. However, my Scores 770 across the board and my income is higher. As with anything in the credit world YEMV. Things have changed since I originally apped for the Flagship. No more hard pulls for CLIs. This may be the right time to app. I say go for it. It's only a HP.

+1
My 18 year old nephew with basically no credit history at all.
Apped for a NFCU CC and got $25k.
His income is around $30k.
Credit history was only a couple of months old. AU on a couple of my accounts is all he had reporting.
It's hard for me to imagine OP receiving a $1k approval. Though it's always possible.
My Momma always said why put off tomorrow what you can do today! lol I applied for my NFCU card less than 1 week after joining.....APPROVED $24K. So what do you think you should do

YMMV
Call again....they do!!! I've called several times and they do. I will tell you the last Rep said the pre qual is not rock solid like other places like AMEX, Cap 1, Discover. She said that she has seen folks that have been pre qual for all cards and when they apply they end up being denied. So take the pre qual with a grain of salt

I don't disagree with you that OP should not get a $1K SL but it has happened before. It has also happened that a new Flagship was declined but a second app for another card yielded more than a $5K SL. NFCU can be really picky with their Flagship approvals.
