Re: NFCU Card Questions.

Yes, I can see your point on this one.

How are you liking the More Rewards Amex card? I have heard that its most favorable out of the tier besides flag.

I hope to get flag one day it all depends on what happens -  I am pretty sure I can app for more rewards or cash rewards card.

Any other tips?

NAVY: $50,000

@Anonymous  I am told it can vary however current DP's say keep flagship as a second or third app due to the higher limits.

For the first, it would either be n rewards, go rewards or More rewards ( also depending on spend, CH, File, etc. I hope this helps and If you do app keep us posted.

Re: NFCU Card Questions.

If you have no relationship with them, NFCU can be unpredictable with SL on a first card.

Some with what looks like sketchy profiles get monster SL, some with what looks like very solid profiles get very small SL.   Some get SL that seem to be in line with expectations for their profile. And everything in between.

And cards that start with small limits tend to be limited to smaller CLI (typically 3x-so if you start with $500, you go to $1500.  $1000 you may go to $3000).

As mentioned above, the second card tends to be a more generous SL.

Which card you get depends on what you spend you money on and what kinds of rewards you want (cash vs points).  Cards are only "good" if they match your spending.

There used to be a card that had 5% cash back for gas all the time.  That was a good card for many.  It would be a meh card for me-I'll spend $75 total on gas for the first 1/2 of the year.  Including refilling a rental car.  But I could get sucked into thinking I needed it because it's a "good" card.

Something to keep in mind as you choose a card.

Re: NFCU Card Questions.

@Anonymous I have seen that as well and it's mindblowing

As far as spend I do more travel and I am not too big into cashback cards ( However with NFCU I have heard its a lot easier to get a higher CL with a rewards card so something to keep in mind, the other reward I use points.

Agree they have to match the spending habits of the person.

I appreciate the tips.

How do you like the more rewards card?

Re: NFCU Card Questions.

It is one of my grocery cards.  It has not gotten much use lately because I have been using Discover for 5% back and my Gold card for 4x MR.   I typically spend $1000 or more in groceries for a month.

I tend to use my MR for parking/transit (in person) and for online purchases through membership deals (when it works).  My gripe with the card is that it's on the Amex network-so online retailers recognize that it's an Amex card.  They want the 4-digit code on the front of the card (like an Amex card), but with the NFCU, the 3-digit code off the back is the one that is needed.  So I have sketchy luck using the card online.  Which includes paying for my most expensive parking (which would be a big draw for me).

Its also the card on file at the vet's office (my dog really, really, really likes the vet I guess) as it was my highest limit at one of her 174959950505 emergency visits.  No extra rewards for that but it's a regular expense.

Travel is generally a big spend for me-but not for the forseeavle future.  So I will worry about the Flagship when travel resumes.

My first card had a $700 SL (go rewards).  My more rewards was card 2 - with a $10k SL.

Re: NFCU Card Questions.

I hear you on groceries its amazing how fast all the numbers add up I have been told that DISCO is a good roating card that is what alot of members are doing, sounds like your doing the same which is awesome.

I did not know about the 3 digit code on the front of the cards I will keep that in mind.

Travel is my bigger expense as well it sounds like your using Flag for that is my plan as well when I get there speaking of cards

I can see that your first card was go rewards, was there a reason to get that one first or why it caught your attention? The one I would prefer is More Rewards and than Flag. Do you feel that is a good route based on my credit profile above? I would love to hear some insights on this when you get a chance.

Thanks Smiley Happy and hope the dogo is doing okay.

Re: NFCU Card Questions.

The More Rewards is a very strong card for a no annual fee card. As points are exactly 1 cent per point, you can think of it as cash back. While you wont be able to interesting redemptions with the points like MR or UR, they still are pretty value. I say go for it with your profile. NFCU has been great.

I could see this card taking over for my Amex Gold, but that was my first "premium" card after rebuilding and I like how it looks. lol

I was in the same situation as you. I actually apped for the Flagship and was denied due not meeting the minimum credit line for the Flagship. I reapped for the More Rewards a week later and it was actually an SP and instant approval for 4.7K @ the lowest APR. (TU 652) I am going for the 91 day CLI and then maybe app for the Flagship a little after. Either way, the More Rewards gives me value as its a much lower APR than my other cards and it will probably grow larger, thus allowing my other cards to grow larger with it.

Hello all I am planning to app for this soon.

A few things:

1. What card would you recommend

Whatever you like the most (that fits your spend) I would not recommend Flagship as your first card.

2. What credit score do you suggest when applying

Have seen FICO 580 approved. The higher the better!

3. What report do they use?

They usualy pull TU (Transunion) for New applications and then Equifax for Limit Increase requests

Hmmmm. Might be Geo? They pulled EQ for me in FL. I read online before applying in branch and thawed only EQ. (More Rewards)

I opted for the Go Rewards because I wanted a no FTF fee Visa and I also knew that the first Navy card is kind of a crapshoot for SL.  So I opted not to pursue a goal card as my first.  Since the SL was $700, I am glad I made that choice.   It currently has a BT at 1.99% (with a lot of CL transferred from my More Rewards), but I will close it when I'm ready to travel again and want to try for the Flagship.  I don't want to say I viewed it as a disposable card, but I wasn't shooting for a keeper card as my first.  It is a Visa with no FTF - which was something I wanted for travel.  So it worked.

And I think the route for you is the one that works for you.  The More Rewards is a great card.  It has a huge number of good categories, a good SUB, no fees (af/FTF/BT/etc).  Navy is a great lender.  The SL for the first card tends to be a crapshoot. If you're OK with a possibly small limit for a goal card (which may be tripled at 3 months), then go for your goal card.  Keep in mind that means if you get a $1000 limit, at 3 months you might get it raised to $3k-where it sits for another 180 days until you can request another CLI).  Or you might get a great limit out of the gate.  It's way too unpredictable for anyone to know.  So that's your choice.

And thank you.  Doggie is reasonably fine.  She has chronic (expensive) conditions not covered by her insurance. She's worth it though.

1. It depends on what you're looking for. I like cards which are good for balance transfers, so my favorite is the Platinum card.

2. Your credit score is more than sufficient.

3. In my experience, they pull EQ.
