Re: NFCU Eligability

I joined today as DOD employee (previously). I worked on an army base 10 years ago at a grocery store for like 6 months... They accepted me no problem. No other military connection besides cousins.

Just sharing my input Smiley Happy

Re: NFCU Eligability

I keep reading about NFCU so I checked out their website and am doing some research.  I was never in the military but if I'm reading things right, I'm eligible to join because my father and grandfather were in the military. I don't talk to my father and my grandfather passed away years ago (he was in WWII).  Am I eligible?

Thanks!

Get your father to join.

Re: NFCU Eligability

That wouldn't be a good reason to start talking to him after 20 years.

Would I need to provide my grandfather's SS # or Army info?

Them being in the military does not make you eligible.  They would have to have retired from the military for you to get in.  Service alone doesn't do it.

Re: NFCU Eligability

I chatted with someone at NFCU today.  She asked if my grandfather retired from the military.  I told her that I didn't know. I do know that he served during WWII and was in the military for awhile.  She said - I recommend that you apply for membership through your grandfather since he may have retured from the military (Servd at least 20 years). In the application, you'll need to have your grandfather's last name, last four of his SSN and the brance of the military he served in avaialble.  The membership department will reach you directly if they need anything additional.

I guess I'll have to do a little research. I believe he was in the Army.  Just need the last four of his SSN. Will be a good time to find out some more about him.  And if I don't qualify, then I'll see what other credit unions might be comparable to NFCU for non-military people. They seem to have generous credit lines.  Tha's what I'm looking for. At least one card in the $10k-$15k range and a long range relationship with them.

Re: NFCU Eligability

I joined just this week legitimately through my roommate who is a current NFCU member, who I've lived with for 5 years (didn't know about NFCU benefits until I joined this forum - thanks guys!). They made me submit a lot of paperwork proving we live together - and this is despite the fact that our addresses are the same on our licenses, credit reports, etc. I am actually kind of thankful they made me jump through the hoops prior to approving me, but luckily my sponsorship was legitimate so I had no real worries. Just had to be patient, as it's obviously worth it.

YES tiger be thankful, very thankful they verified you on the front end. I have TRULY seen some horrific stories about accounts and cards being frozen by security.

Re: NFCU Eligability

Me too! I read the horror stories in addition to all the accolades.

I decided to go through with my app anyway because I wasn't using any loopholes or stretched truth, but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole if I felt my eligibility was in question. And I'm still a little wary, lol. Haven't apped for any credit products and will probably wait a bit on that for paranoia and because I'm expecting a good score bump any minute.
