NFCU prequal: how solid ?

I recently joined NFCU (dad's a proud vet! :-) )

and the app to join went smoothly over the phone (half hour, from start to using account online). No hard inquiries on any CRA.

i joined to eventually get a c card in the spring with them due to their reputation and cash rewards (I'll be trimming the "fat" between now and then, jettisoning the subprimers) but for giggles I did the prequal.

Was approved instantly for the secured card. Loved that! Did not apply.

separately, the day I applied for membership, I got a flyer "preselecting" me for the UN secured Cash Rewards card. Which is why I joined actually.

so, if theoretically hypothetically I tipped toed out of the garden and got the HP, what do you think would happen? —> if I cold apped rather than get the secured card. Would they counter offer the secured card?

My TU is currently 648, Fico 8. But Fico 9 is strangely 595!!! Do not sure what is happening LOL

Re: NFCU prequal: how solid ?

Not solid at all. I and a few other members have tried it and it comes back as prequalifying for all cards, even when one already has said cards and/or hasn't hit 91/3 and/or is full of baddies (in my case).

That said, they aren't the most strict lender by any means, and your score combined with relatively low DTI and few baddies would probably* yield an approval.

Cold apping versus being "pre-qualified" makes no difference.

*As with anything, it isn't guaranteed and YMMV.

Do you think they'd counter with the secured card if denied for an unsecured card?

Not the limit I wanted and not the Sorry No Card For You that I was expecting. But hey. I got it. Dang.

Well it's a moot point now, but yes, I believe they would have countered with the secured or let you use the same HP to apply for a secured. Smiley Tongue

Congrats on the approval! I totally called it! Smiley Very Happy It does seem like a borderline approval, but you're in! And, unlike Centurion Bank Amex, this card should actually grow quickly.

Re: NFCU prequal: how solid ?

@OmarGB9 You did call it!! Wondering the CLIs are 91/3 right? Hopefully I can get my profile up by then. (Most TU Inqs passing 12mo threshold this fall, and my EQ score is really high). Thanks again!!!

Re: NFCU prequal: how solid ?

Well 91/3 refers to your FIRST CLI on a new card, after that it's every 6 months. But also at 91/3 you can try for another card if you'd like and most likely get approved and for a much higher limit, assuming of course profile stays good/improves and this card is treated responsibly. If you do end up going that route, be sure to apply for the new card first, and then CLI on this card (NOT over the phone; use app or website).

And no problem! I'm closely following all NFCU apps/approvals now since I'm looking to app myself here within the next few weeks.

seems to indicate that you do the CLI first then the 2nd card. What do you think?
