I applied last week for a Navy Fed cash rewards card and was approved for $1,000. I asked for a higher limit after I was approved and was denied based on my internal score which was 302, bankruptcy, and being a new member. My Fico's are 617 TU and 650 Equifax. It will be 2 years in December since BK Discharge. I had high utilization on 3 credit cards when I applied of 75%. I plan on paying down all my exciting cc in the next 2 months to 30% Utilization. All payments since BK have been on time. I was thinking of going for a CLI in December and also a CLOC. I am also doing direct deposit which does not go in until November. I am trying to plan as I really need to build a pole barn next spring and need to get my credit lines increased. So any input is appreciated on when I should apply again, and also if I get the 24 hour review message do I automatically send a message and say exactly what ? in regards to a HP.? Not to process it, and back out? that is where I am confused. Also can I do that through secure message? as I am not always available to call if I am working..but I can get online. Thanks
Thank You, what if I get the 24 hr review? should I take the HP?
No, No I didn't mean now I will wait 3 statements. Thanks for your help !
@masw, welcome to the community! Glad you joined us.
I would suggest that while you wait, consider going over to the Navy thread that Creddit Addict started and read at least the last couple of dozen pages and then subscribe to it. That way you can follow the current trends at Navy. Here's the link.
As @Matt said, you need to make sure you are over 90 days + and that three statements have cut before going for it. What we are starting to see is that a lot of CLI requests are going to 24 hr. review and people are applying for a second card immediately and getting it whether or not they are approved for a CLI. Yes, it will be another HP for the second card, but you'll have to decide if it's worth it for you. You might want to go for GoRewards as it doesn't have to start at $5K as does the Flagship, just in case they want to offer a smaller SL.
From my own experience, I can tell you that with the Navy cards, this is how I got my CLI's. For that first 90 days, I charged everything I normally paid for in cash and then took the cash and made several PIF payments every month. I always made sure that the card balance was at zero several days before the statement cut. Once the statement posted (and I could see it on my dash) I repeated the same thing. I was rebuilding and used the same approach for both of my Navy cards.
Join us over on the thread above and you will get tons of additional insight.
To answer your question, yes you can try and stop the HP on the CLI but you may not be fast enough if it goes to review. The best time to try for a CLI with a SP is right after the AR. If you got your card last week, then the 1st AR that would possibly benefit you with a SP would be January 1st. You'll know when the AR has been done because the chat picks up quickly about it on the thread above. If you do go to review and want to try and stop the HP, you have to call and fast. Some people already have the call in queue when they push the button. A secured message IMHO will not be fast enough.
It's important to make sure the 3rd statement has posted and you can see it on your dash and that it's at least 90 days. I always allow a few more just to be safe. Here is a great day counter link.
Start counting from the day the card was approved.
I look forward to following your journey!!
Just a FYI - I would suggest 91+ days from approval and at least 1 week from the 3rd statement. My statement cut on the 18th and was viewable in the online account view and request the CLI and went to review....Denied. Waited 2 days and hit the max on the CLI and instant approval. Went from 4200 to 11400. Was told that all their internal systems need to be updated which can take a few days. Food for thought.
Thank You ...some great advice here... Also got to say that yes I am a new member and left another board because of the critics. I was scared to post as I would be flocked for asking a stupid question.. I appreciate all the help from everyone.
