Navy Federal Thread for CLI and Additional Cards

Re: Navy Federal UPDATED CLI and 2ND ACCOUNT THREAD

When it was time for me to get a CLI and a 2nd card I spoke to a manager at NFCU who had suggested I wait 4 statement cycles.  He explained it wasn’t a rule and he didn’t have a crystal ball in my case, but that time is always a good thing. It was painful.  I was reading about people getting approved who had similar timelines to mine, but no one with a timeline and similar profile.  And my timeline crossed over February being 28 days.  Anyway I was given a 300% CLI, but when your starting at $1k it isn’t a large dollar amount, but a phenomenal percentage.  It was not an instant decision, but the review took only 1 hour.

I waited for the CLI decision before I applied for the second card.  That’s not a rule.  I just chose to prolong my torture.  The second card was approved instantly (goRewards Visa Signature) for $20k.

i have the max CLOC.  I have another account elsewhere and the two accounts are linked.  I have used the CLOC many times, but not for long and not for much.  My other bank has nothing like it...just a link to my credit card.  I love the CLOC product.  It’s genius!  NFCU is quickly winning me over.

Edit:  it’s an EQ pull for the CLI and and EQ pull for the CLOC and a TU pull for new card apps.  None of them are soft pulls.  And yes, all of this info is in this thread multiple times.  I’m posting my recent experience so you don’t have to dig.

Re: Navy Federal UPDATED CLI and 2ND ACCOUNT THREAD

Do I wait 91/3 for 2nd card CLI?  And can I apply for a 3rd card (edit: this would be 7mos since opening first card and approx 8mos since start of relationship) at that time?

Re: Navy Federal UPDATED CLI and 2ND ACCOUNT THREAD

I got my flagship today - it sure is cool looking ! I pc-ed from the cash rewards once I got a cli to 6k. I really would like an Amex but I need my TU to go up. Probably not until the first of June.

Hey everybody...  Long time lurker and this is my glorious first post.  Be gentle....

First, thanks to everybody for all their input, especially on this subject.  I'm still firmly in my rebuilding phase and on a whim, I applied for the AMEX More Rewards through NFCU and to my surprise, got approved for $3,900.  My 91st day is May 16th and my 3rd statement cuts on May 19th.  I have another credit card that will be reporting a much lower balance on May 22, so I am waiting until May 24th to follow the process and apply for the CLI.

- In the last two months, I have charged (and PIF) about $2,500 -$3,000 each month.

- I have a car loan with them as well that I got at the end of January and I am currently 2 payments ahead.

- The new updated score in NFCU has my EQ FICO 9 at 684

- I'll be at about 10% total utilization when I apply

I'm obviously going for the max CLI and then applying for another card.  I really would like the Visa Flagship product that they have because the travel rewards work well for me.  Is that card more difficult to qualify for in general, or is it just the minimum starting limit of $5,000 that can present a challenge?

Also....  I understand that if I want the CLOC, I should apply for that at the same time - but I do not want to hurt my chances of getting the second card.  Any thoughts on if I should wait to apply for the CLOC until I get word back on the CLI and the new CC?

Great Job on your rebuild so far, i was there about a year ago and still now.

As for the CLI and CLOC, those are EQ pulls 98% of the time.  A CLOC is good for Util padding as you really dont use it unless you overdraft and obviously that isnt recommended for a anyone, esp a rebuilder.  Whether or not you wait on it could be dependant on if your app for the Flagship is instant.  If it is then no worries, if not then its upto you if you wait.

New cards are TU pulls 98% of the time. So the only difference for the flagship is the 5k minimum.  With Navy that doesnt seem that hard to do, but YMMV.  Requirements for the card are literally the same besides that limit.  So as long as you can qualify for a card over 5k, then the flagship wouldnt be that much harder to get. If you get an instant CLI(or counter over 5k), then the flagship should be just as easy.  I know you mentioned your UTIL, and while its good to keep low, Navy is more about your DTI.  As long as that is in check you will have a much better chance at what you are going after.

Cant wait to hear about all your success with this journey.

Thank you..  it's been quite a journey.  Started at about 500 across the board last June, so I feel like I'm finally getting back in the game.

That's good and bad news - my EQ is my best by far and my TU is my weakest by far.  So I guess the CLI is looking good and possibly the CLOC.  We shall see on the Flagship.  If I get denied on the Flagship, do you think it would be wise to apply for one of the other CC products?   My DTI should be fine, since I'm at about $100K/yr and all I have is rent and a car payment of $300.  My credit history is very short tho.  I got my first Cap1 card in Oct and I am an authorized user on a couple cards.

I agree with you 100% on the CLOC - I just want it there for utilization % and a possible resource for business expenses if I need it.

We shall see...   I'll keep this updated when I get he results.   Less than 2 weeks until I know for sure!

That's awesome - congrats on the new card at $20K!  And thanks for the insight...  I will probably prolong my torture as well, at least until I get the results from the CLI.  Lol...

That CLOC product is genius.  It's unique to NFCU from what I can tell and I'm pretty excited to see what I get.  Hopefully my usage and paying ahead on the car payments gives me a little love as far as their internal scoring is concerned.  I can afford a couple hard pulls at this point since I have very few, but I do want to use them wisely.  If I nail down the CLOC and a new CC, I'll be solidly in the garden for a while......

When did you apply for the CLOC?  Directly after your first card?  I didn't really want to push my luck, since I got an auto loan and the AMEX at basically the same time.  But I didn't come close to using what they approved for me on the car loan either, so maybe that might be a little help as well.

Congrats...  Can't wait to get that little black beauty myself!  I may have to start with something else though, simply because my TU is lagging behind a bit.  But all in due time....

Where is the max button on the android app? When I asked for my cli I never saw it, only where you request specific amount.

As long as your DTI/income is good, the scores dont have as much of an impact as you would think. You seem to be in a very good spot there.   I love Navy (esp being a rebuilder like yourself), just keep in mind that with a little bit of time and history on your profile you will be able to get much much better travel cards. Depending on your goals/needs, Amex Delta Skymiles card/SPG/HIlton seem to be very easy to get.  i got mine around 635.  YMMV as always.  just some food for thought.

Yes the CLOC is great for UTIL, but i really wouldnt plan on using it much if you dont have too. I say this for one reason, it starts charging interest the day the charge posts, there is no grace period unlike the CC products.
