Not sure which secured card to apply for

I just signed up for the MYFICO service today and was using the simulator and saw that a credit card of only $500 would raise my score quite a bit. Now I am wondering if there is a better card to use for credit rebuilding? I am currently considering the Capital One card and the Navy Federal. Any thoughts on which is the better choice for a secured card?

Re: Not sure which secured card to apply for

I don't know anything about Navy Federal, but I know Capital One is typically pretty good to work with.

Re: Not sure which secured card to apply for

2 other decent ones:

Bank Of America (the 99/500 secured card - apply for a regular card, and see if they offer you that after you are decined)

Discover secured

NFCU $60.4k/PenFed $22.5k/Commerce $15K/53 $11K/Synovus $14K/BBT $11K/CapOne $12K/DCU $7.5K/BMO $7.5K/Chase $14.5k/Cabelas $10K/ and many many more!
Total CL $398600, plus car and RV loan.
Ooh. Ooh. Getting closer to that $500K mark!

Re: Not sure which secured card to apply for

Capital One does NOT unsecure. Discover, BofA, Citi CAN unsecure but there is no guarantee of that.

What are your current scores, do you have any other cards? Any baddies? Have you tried any of the pre-qualifications to see if there are any unsecured offers?

Re: Not sure which secured card to apply for

I suggest Navy Federal for sure. I would also get a BOA secured. Both have been very good to me! I didn't have to start with a NFCU secured. But, I apped BOA and was countered with a secured. Opened it with $300 December 2013,unsecured at 6 months and is now $20k.

Re: Not sure which secured card to apply for

Thank you all for the information. Going to be looking for an unsecured pre-qual first then go on to the secured. I will definitely go with NFCU and check the offers from BOA and Discover. I do have some baddies that I need to have checked because they were opened by my ex while I was deployed. No cards as of now but hopefully will be on my way to getting a few to start the rebuild process.

I like Baller's idea of Navy Federal if you can get it. But Cap1 is a common rebuilder for people.

Re: Not sure which secured card to apply for

Navy, navy, NAVY! I started with a $500 secured card with them and it's now $20k. Their card will graduate at month 13 as long as you have good history. You even earn rewards Smiley Happy After 6 months with the secured you should qualify for an unsecured card with NFCU and then you just got the elusive 2nd card. Good luck!
