I received my card ten days after applying and six business days after approval.
I couldn't activate my card on the website or through the mobile app. because, according to the chat rep., I don't have a credit card. I did activate it through an automated phone call. The rep "found" my card and told me that it would appear in 24-48 hours when PenFed fixed this error. I'm very disappointed in PenFed's tech.
On the other hand, I'll make good use of the 5% gasoline rebate.
I was actually interested in applying but now I see people saying they were asked to UPLOAD their ID/DL?
Upload their SS card?
Upload their recent pay stubs?
Upload thier souls, what else should I expect?
After hearing all of this, I guess I don't want a pen card. Their ssl was a little tricky, but it does work. Since I don't have a payment until 8/30, I'll be with them for a while!

When I joined PenFed earlier this year it was a total hassle. It took weeks of going back and forth with various reps about what documents to upload. They kept asking me to upload various things and then later saying they weren't sufficient, even though it was exactly what they asked for. Very frustrating, and the reps aren't always a nice as one might expect. I would have given up if I didn't need the SSL.
That said, my advice now, after going through the process is, if they're asking for docs:
1) Always have a federally compliant ID with your current home address; and,
2) Always have an actual SS card. Nothing else will do, despite what the reps or emails may say. I had to get a new copy from the SS administration, since I hadn't seen my actual SS card since about 1985.
If you have those two things exactly as I've described them, you should be fine.
Shockingly, they made me upload them again when opening a checking account and again when opening a savings account. Don't you people already have this on file? I just sent it to you last week FFS!
PenFed has been burnt in many ways recently wether DDA or CC losses and they have tigtened up quite a bit in the last year being no BT offers on existing CC to some holds at one point on funds being credited etc. Nature of the economy and some bad decisions on their part as well likely
