Are you sure about this? I thought that simply paying a collection off and having it report as "paid" or with a zero balance doesn't affect your credit score because it still lists as a collection on your credit report, which is a score-killer. Just like it doesn't matter if the collection balance is for $5 or $5,000. That's why you have to ask them if they will DELETE it after you pay, and that's how you get the score increase. At least, that's what happened in my case.
