Still no news, but maybe soon ... they hard-pulled Experian yesterday. I guess the pull they did one week ago wasn't good enough ... the only change is the addition of the AU card.
I'm not sure if you know this but here is the Amex App Status Link:
https://www262.americanexpress.com/eaol/welcome.do
Thanks, I received and checked the link for my prior applications (one denied, one canceled), but didn't realize I could use it any time. It shows as "in progress," which I don't think means anything in particular, but I would expect to get a result soon if they pulled my credit yesterday. Will update when I hear back.
I got a letter in the mail today from Amex, dated June 21. The letter said that since I was denied for an Amex Gold Card in the last 30 days, I was auto-denied for "this" application. The confusing part is that I applied twice on June 16 (first one insta-denied, second one cancelled), then applied again on June 18 (shows on the status checker site as "in progress"), and, they pulled my credit again on June 23. So I don't know if the letter is referring to the second June 16 application (which the status checker says was "cancelled", not "denied"), or to the June 18 application. And if the latter, I don't know why they pulled my credit on June 23. Anyway, guess we'll see .... or not ...
The auto deny letter is probably referring to the 16th.
I had not applied for this card prior to the 16th. On the 16th, the first application (my error) was through the normal site. It was instantly denied. My second application was via the CAP link. It got a "we'll let you know within 14 days" notice. The next day, I saw it was cancelled, not denied, cancelled.
My third application was via the CAP link on the 18th. It shows as "in progress."
So, if it was for the first application on the 16th, it is an invalid reason, because at that time, I had not applied within 30 days. If it was for the second application on the 16th, I don't know why one would say "denied" and the other would say "cancelled", but in any case, the same logic would apply to the application on the 18th, which was also within 30 days of the first application (the initial one on the 16th).
But, who knows? I may be dealing with whatever a clerk types in a computer field at 3am. Best-case scenario could be that they are approving the application on the 18th and didn't have the right button to push to clear status to let them do that, so they pushed a "denied" button, or, something along those lines. Or, three applications from the same person for the same card in a two-day period may simply confuse their process. Right now, I'd say the CAP thing is looking bleak at least until the 30 days expires, which will be late July. I will try again then, unless I'm surprised by an approval for the "in progress" application.
OK, a puzzling and unwelcome addition to this saga: Today, I received a letter dated June 24 that said Amex needs tax transcripts to verify my income. I've tried googling this, and most results pertain to people asking for large credit limit increases, or adding multiple new cards. This would be my first personal Amex (since the 1990s), but I did submit multiple applications in a short period of time. I understand that I might be flagged somehow, but I am confused that I'd be flagged in this particular way, considering that they know, or should know, that I work for a large corporation. Couldn't they just call my employer to verify this? My claimed income is decent but not exceptional, and I listed it accurately.
I kind of don't want to do this? What if I jump through these hoops and get denied anyway? Just on principle, I find this ridiculous. I could scan my W2 or forward my digital paystub or they could call my company's HR department, but they want to do it the most annoying way possible, like I'm laundering money for a criminal enterprise or something? And, my income from last year was a little lower than my income from this year, will that make them think I was lying? But, I don't want to get blackballed by Amex by refusing to respond, either. Any suggestions? And by the way, does this imply that I'll be approved if I do jump through the hoops?
There is a longer version of this (see the "applying for personal card through corporate card part 2" thread for that), but short version, I applied several times in a short period of time for an Amex card. I do not have a personal Amex card and have not had one since the 1990s (Green Card back then). I have a green corporate card now via my employer, which is a 100-year-old Fortune 50 company with 350,000 employees.
I listed my income accurately on my application. My income is decent but nothing amazing. Low six figures.
Today, I received in the mail a letter dated June 24 that said to process my application, they need to receive a form giving them permission to ask the IRS for my tax transcripts. I looked online, and saw that they do this in some cases where, for example, someone requests an enormous credit limit, or opens multiple cards at once. I am puzzled and displeased that American Express would do this in the case of a corporate card holder, listing a medium/moderate income, applying for a first personal card. Why not call my employer? Or, why not ask for a paystub? Or, why not ask for a photocopy of a W2? Something about a tax transcript seems more invasive than those things. I also worry it will drag out weeks/months and I'll still get denied. I also worry they'll consider the fact that my income last year was a little lower than my income this year to be evidence of dishonesty. My current annual salary is $8,000 higher than my 2018 salary, which might be close enough that they'd go with it, but come to think of it, what if an applicant was unemployed last year? Or, what if I got fired last week? How does last year's tax return prove anything except perhaps my likely income spectrum? Just in general, in what universe does this make sense for a card application?
Anyway ... any advice? I honestly don't want to do this. But I also don't want to end up on an Amex blacklist. Thanks!
