Pre-approved for Sam's Club card at counter but I declined it - would I still be approved online?

Hey guys,

Yesterday while getting a new Sam's Club membership, I was told I was pre-approved for a Sam's Club credit card, but I declined because it was a 1k limit.  Should I have accepted?  And if I were to apply online or in the store would my chances be lower without that pre-approved offer?

I don't really need another card, but after I got home I've read that it's actually a good card to have, so I'm a bit tempted.  I saw they have a 24 month financing offer in the store, but it might be for jewelry only, and I have no need for that.

I do have another Synchrony card (I think that is who backs the Sam's Club card?) with a $5000 limit.

Thanks!

Tough Call. They have a high APR , but even at 1k, they give out generous CLi's like Walmart. Good luck on whatever you do.

I'm pre-approved for a Walmart card too if that's better or equivalent.  Smiley Happy

What is your Fico 8 TU score? If over 700-710 good chance you might get the Sams MC. I will be taking advantage of the 24 months promo this xmas.

I'm not sure, but my TU CreditKarma score is 730, and my Fico score never seemed to differ much from it.  I finally let myfico subscription drop a month or two ago and I don't really want to torment myself with it again yet to find out.  Smiley Happy

I'm sure it's over 700!  It was when I was last able to view my scores on MyFico, and only good things have happened to my reports since then.

My TU score was 769 upon approval and got a 10k starting limit and then I got a cli to 15k before I even had the card. If you app and get a low limit call CS and ask for a cli to 5k or higher, seems like lenders are in a giving mood around this time of year.

Go for it! I was approved for a strange $937 limit and instantly grew the card to $8K limit after my first statement cut (via chat request).

I'm looking forward to inevitably being upgraded to the Sams MC, too. Definitely another perk.

I wish there was a magical way to know what you could be approved for beyond the initial limit without having to actually apply!

If I could get it for at least 5k, and if the 24 month financing applied to more than just jewelry I'd jump on it!  Otherwise it might be better for me to lay low while the rest of my baddies fall off over this next year.  Smiley Happy

If you were pre-approved at the store, I think you have an excellent chance of being approved online, especially since you already have history with Synchrony.

If you're able to get the Sam's Club MasterCard, it's a very sweet card... 5% cash back on gas, 3% for restaurants and travel, and that's in addition to the benefits of the 'regular' Sam's Club Credit account, also known as the PLCC (private label credit card).

Even if you only get the PLCC, it still has its uses... namely the deferred interest promos they run (tires!).  Like others have mentioned, the APR is generally high, but if you PIF each month (other than the 0% promos) you can do quite well.

Good luck!  Smiley Wink
