Prequal Question

A few years ago I got some prequals in the mail when my credit was only around 530 and when I tried to claim them to build credit I was denied. Why do they send prequals that say youre preapproved for a credit card and then deny you? Are they still like that?

Now that im getting my credit better (all 3 are within a few points of 650), Im starting to get prequals in the mail again from various companies. Most of them are from Discover (I get one from them about every 2 weeks). Im afraid to be denied if I try to apply again because I dont want unnecessary hard pulls on my credit reports, but I also would like a couple new cards to raise my score now.

I currently Only have a $500 Cap One Plat, $750 Cap One QS1, $3000 USAA, and $1500 PSECU. I also have a $300 Kohls that I would like to hit the request a CL increase button (I dont use it but increased limit will help util) but am afraid they will do a hard pull. My ,main goal is to eventually get a card with a $10k limit so I can consolidate to one card and work on paying that off.

Re: Prequal Question

Yes it is other than 2 late student loan payments from 2011 but then loan is paid in full since 2014. Why would they send prequals if they would just deny it. I guess they dont really mean preapproved like they say on the mailer. Maybe I should try and see if they approve

Re: Prequal Question

Personal story...I was also getting discover pre qualification materials in the mail. I hit up their prequalify site and got the good news. I have 2 30 day lates from 2014 on my file and scores were high 600s. At the time I applied I had a lonely capital one card with a 1650 line and over 50% utilization. I applied online and was instantly approved for 7k. A few days later I got my it card in a very nice package with an 18% rate. If you have a pre qualification I'd say you're good Smiley Happy

My wife just requested one on her $300 CL and was approved for $750 just like that. I've read on here where you can hit Khols every 4mths with no dings. My ,main goal is to eventually get a card with a $10k limit so I can consolidate to one card and work on paying that off.

As for Discover, I app'd a pre-qual from them and got a denial HP. The wiser ones here say that if the OFFER has a solid APR and not a range (say 11.9%-23.9% for example) then it's solid. Personally, I'm in the same range as you and I'm staying away from them. On the up side though, if you go to the pre-qual site and enter your info and you get a single APR% you are probably good to go.

You have a good start on rebuilding.  5 revolving credit cards and a store card.  IMHO, I would work on CLIs.  If you're looking for a card to consolidate you will want one with a 0% introductory rate period and with a decent APR after that introductory period ends.  I could be wrong but I think prequals are based on SPs and when you actually app you get the HP.  Notice it states in the fine print you can be denied if your creditworthness has changed.  blah blah.  You should do what feels right for you as you have a good grip on your financial situation.

I agree with Jim.

In your shoes, I'd wait a year...work with I've got now. Try ang get CLI on the cards you have over the next year. You could get approved now but then you might be unsatisfied with your intial credit limit. If you build your credit, grow it out some more, your credit limit might be more to your liking and that Discover 5% rotating category becomes more useful to you. Just my two cents. Good luck either way!
