Previously maxed cards...Too much credit too soon?

Any insight or advice appreciated! I will listen.

I’m thinking of applying for another card and I’d like advice as to whether or not it’s a good idea. I had been carrying my cards maxed out for the past 3 years and just came to a point in April where I’ve been able to make significant payments. My total cc debt in April was 11k, now it’s around 3k. I had roughly 12k in credit at the time, 24k if I count my AU.

In April Citi gave me an auto increase taking me from 4k to 5k.
In July I applied for Blispay and received a CL of 7k, I also manually requested an increase from Discover and received 6k. So in July I essentially doubled MY credit limits.

Current scores from CCT: TU: 752  EQ: 778  Ex: 758
I’ve listed my stats in red and my stats with my AU in blue
Current stats:
Total Util: 10%/ 14%
AAoA: 10.2 / 5.1
Inquiries: Just 1 on Experian
Baddies: 1 30 day late in 2010
Discover: 3500/14000
Citi: 0/5000
Blispay: 0/7000
AU: 0/12000

I have no loans. The above are the only things in my profile.
Again, prior to this I had my Discover riding at 60-90% (they gave me small auto increases whenever I approached 90%) and my Citi card at ~85% (@ 4k cl). Both since mid 2013.
This would be the last card and I wouldn’t be applying for anything else probably for the rest of my life.
Too much too soon? Should I just wait a couple of years to add another card so that I can establish that I won’t max out my cards again?

A previously maxed out card has no bearing on any card you apply for now as long as the maxed card have been paid down.  There is no need to wait a couple of years to apply.  If you really have a use for the card you want to apply for then go for it.

Any chance OP you would perhaps be interested in an Amex to round out your cards?. If you are looking perhaps only one more card for years to come perhaps build a relationship with Amex, Chsse even. Your profile looks good so i think you will be ok going after 1 more card if it benefits you. Best of luck and thanks for sharingSmiley Happy

If it is going to take you another 6-12 months to finish paying off that discover card, you may want to look for a card that fits your needs but also has a 0% apr on balance transfers for a certain time frame.  Atleast then you won't be paying anymore interest on that 3500, which will save you money in the end.

As for waiting to apply because all your accounts had longterm high utilization in the recent past..... Dont let that stop you from applying, utilization has no memory.

First just like you I have to question how fit you are on doing repayments. On the other hand if you can find a card that you like, can use it, and it had a 0% interest on BT's I cannot see how that would not help you by cutting interest. The real person that can say what is too much is you and your existing banking partners. Remember if a bank does not like your existing limits relative to your report then it can always lower them or even close the account. It really depends on how you structure your relations with the lending partners.

Re: Previously maxed cards...Too much credit too soon?

I was having financial issues because of medical problems. Prior to that cards were always PIF. Discover is carrying a BT from my citibank card and is already at 0%, so I'm good there.

Thanks for the help!
