Question about Recon

Hi guys,

IN SHORT: Does Cap 1 usually do a HP for recon's? I only have 2 HP's currently. Should I even worry about adding 2 more possibly?

So yesterday I applied for a Captial One Platinum card. Because Im dumb and listened to Credit Karma telling me I had good odds. My score's had just jumped by around 50 points up into the low 600's a few days before. In the end the score they pulled was lower than any of the experian models that are showing on the paid version of the app. I really don't see why it has to be so hard to find out which score they will pull from and get an accurate number before applying. Regardless, I had intitally planned to apply for the C1 secured version and still do, but you know... CK got my hopes up. Anyways before doing so I figured I'd give the backdoor number a try first and see if a human being will reconsider my unsecured app. Assuming it wouldn't require another hard pull and calling these numbers just resulted in a human deciding instead of Tron.

So once I got through the prelim questions "whats your letter say etc..." the lady says she will put my application up for recon. I'm like ok great. Will yall do another hard pull? She said "She cant know if they will or wont." Confused I essentially asked again in other ways a few times and again same answer's essentially. After explaining she doesnt know each time she goes on to say "but we will not be creating a new application, just using the same information from the previous application." So I guess this is my question. What does that mean exactly lol? It seems almost intentionally ambiguous as she repeated it after everytime I asked if they would hard pull. She almost added a tone that implied to me she isn't legally allowed to tell me something but was trying to get me to understand? Certainly could have just been in my head, but I said I would do more research and call back instead. As I would rather use another hard pull to get the platinum secured version than waste another one on a 2nd denial. After all I can eventually graduate to the unsecured version. She also made it sound like they were just going to run it through the system again with the same info and not be decided by a human. Maybe all the recon information I have seen was old and now they all just re-run it and hard pull again hoping its improved. But if thats the case what would be the point of recon and not just applying again?

Anyways does anyone have any experience with Recon's and can speak further on this? Did they do a hard pull when you did recon? If not everytime on average etc...? Also is there a point where you can almost know recon has no chance? I have a fairly recent CO and it was my only card... 12 years of age. That and the missed payments that go with a CO are my only negatives but obviously thats a big one considering it was my entire credit history. I only have 2 HP on my EX and in total should I even worry about a possible 2 more HP?

Anyways sorry its so long. lol Thanks for taking the time to read it all!

Re: Question about Recon

It's Capital One, unless they are denying you to submit documentation or to confirm a fraud alert, there is no reconsideration with Capital One, sadly

In the future, use Capital One's pre approval tool, it's pretty reliably accurate, unlike credit karma odds which are random and hardly based on your profile at all

@Jnbmom @GZG Well glad I dodged a second useless HP. I am now approved for the secured version already! Gunna sit on these two cards and my CB account for a bit until I see some positive changes for now. Thanks guys!

Cap1 uses mortgage scores, so for Experian that's FICO 2, if you pay for myFico plan, you can get all three mortgage scores

Congrats!!

We don't condone freezing a report so another is pulled , but yes I am well aware of that .
