My friend is debating on which card to apply for QS1 or QS. His credit is fair, good income, under 10% utilization. I know he has a great chance at QS1 but I told him to go for the QS. If they deny him will he be considered for the QS1, if not, if he applies for the QS1 after denial will they either use the first HP or will the CRA merge the two HP becasue they pulled within a short period?
Have they tried the pre-approval page yet? Cap1 is pretty accurate if an offer shows up there. Do you have any info on your friend other than fair credit - scores, baddies, etc. That makes a difference.
IMO, QS1 will generally give lower SL's and credit steps, its a MC. QS is the prime card, usually a higher SL and it's a Visa, possible Signature Visa if the SL is high enough.
+1 to the prequal page. Use that, it will guide you to which cards to go for.

I just PC my platinum visa to QS today, though when I asked which one I was offered, I was told this... The better one with the sign on bonus and no annual fee (VISA?) was 1. available to those with excellent credit and 2. only available to new applicants not existing Capital One clients.
So your friends probably not going to get the nicer one with the sign on bonus and no annual fee.

Just a data point... this is correct, the fine-print says the bonus is only for new Capital One customers, however this is generally not enforced.
I already had a QS1 and when I got my QS Visa, I got the $100 spend bonus. There are even folks on here who have been successful at getting the bonus multiple times for the same product, i.e. they have two Ventures, and they got the bonus each time.
In the case of the two Venture accounts, I don't recall if the first was still open when that poster applied for the second one, but s/he got the bonus each time. (In other words, the second one might not have received the bonus had the first still been opened, I don't recall the specifics...)
Regardless, anecdotal evidence says Capital One has been fairly consistent in giving the bonus, especially for a product you've never had. This being said, if for some reason you don't get the bonus, they certainly wouldn't have to allow it, although even in this case with a call to their rewards department in some cases they have.

He is registered "Opt Out" so it would not work.
His credit profile is that his scores are 630ish, has two secured cards with 2K/3K limits that are around two years, an Optima Card with a $1.5K limit that is about 8 month, and several PIF CO, no debt, and AAOA is around 11 years.
Normally I would have recommended the QS1, but my coworker got approved for a QS1 with a $3K limit with a less steller credit profile. She was able to upgrade to a regular QS Mastercard, increased her CL to $6.5K, and just recently got upgraded to the WMC. So Im thinking he could take a risk and apply for a regular QS Visa.
