I got a pre-approval in the mail for a NASA Visa with a decent BT rate of 8.9% with no transfer fee. I applied and 4 days later got an approval message. The card was approved for $12k with a rate of 12.4% (not including BTs). To process the application, I was told they needed my balance transfers first. I provided them with about $2600 in BTs. Then, I received a message stating they were cutting the limit to $3k. I called customer service to ask why. The rep said something about underwriting, blah, blah, and to get the $12k limit I would have to provide $10k in balance transfers. I told her I did not want the card at that point, since $2600 in BT maxes out a card with a $3k limit. I cancelled my application. This CU is the worst.
Dang, sorry to read of the debacle. NASA has fallen off the wagon! Why would anyone want their card maxed out from the start? That's ridiculous! I haven't had any issues, but I only have a CC and savings account with them.
Exactly! I told the CSR that I didn't want to start out with the card being maxed out already, since that would hurt my credit score. She agreed, but tried to smooth it over, saying the ding would only be temporary. No, just no.
That is something I have never heard of. It's ridiculous.
Will it show on your CRs... inquiry, open card then closed? I know it shouldn't. But I've seen posts about card approved, problem with terms or CL, applicant doesn't want the card, it's closed same day... but, it is on CRs, issuer says they won't remove it.
ps... imo, this is gmood's prettiest card

This is a raw deal.. Almost seems kind of calculated & scammy..
Q- Were there any mentions of BT requirements etc in the card details/info?
Q- Was there a box for you to input any amount that you planned to BT when you app'd?
The only way I could see this (and it's pretty thin) is if during the app you filled in an amount of say $8000. you would BT and then didn't follow through... It's still pretty thin...
Sorry this happened..
NASA FCU was the flavor of the month around here a few years ago, a lot of MF posters have since experienced less than expected quality issues with NASA FCU - you don't hear much about them on these forums as of late. The experience OP had doesn't surprise me.
Is NASA FCU open to all, or just those with NASA ties?

If you give a $10 donation to some national space society you too can be a part of that exclusive community.

1. Anyone can join.
2. The way they've been behaving the last couple of years, there's no reason for anyone to join.
I have been with NASA for about 4 yrs now and have never had a problem myself. I use them often, and PIF each month. They have never questioned my purchases either, no matter the amount. They have been good to me. Personally, I consider NASA to be a good CU. Sorry you had problems with them OP.
