Ready for a fun App Spree Story?
I closed on my Dream home (1st home) on 5/31. 5bd/3bath, pool (enclosed), with a back yard (.42 acres) and completely remodeled. :-)
To capitalize on the timing, I went on an app spree 2 hours AFTER closing. (F8 Scores - 698-710)
I really wanted these dream cards:
Chase - Southwest
Chase - Ink - Business (any)
Amex - Gold and Marriott
Citi Double Cash
Applying
I had prequal letters with invitation numbers for Chase Biz, and Citi. But, also a Citi AAdvantage (don't like to fly AA, plus was a weak offer).
So, I open them all up to submit all at once...
Results
Unfortunately, I submitted the Citi AA before the Double Cash, like an idiot. I got approved for AA card ($7600), but not DblCash.
They don't allow for more than 1 account within 30 days, especially personal via the recon line conversation.
In short, here were the results from the 5/31 apps:
AMEX - Marriott- Personal - Denied
AMEX - Gold - Pending - Then, approved 6/4. No limit
Citi AA - Approved Auto. $7600
Citi DblCash - Denied Auto.
BOA - Pers. Travel - Denied.
Barclay - Pending. Then, approved 6/4 $4k
So, that night, I walked away with only 1 approval of $7600. I was a bit deflated. 9 months of getting my scores up from 590 and 2 years of no new CC accounts and that's it?
Fortunately, I got the late approvals of Barclay and the AMEX Gold!!
Afterward, I figured my chance for any new CCs would be done..
So, I did what I wanted...drove by the car dealership and test drove my dream upgrade car (Range Rover)...loved it. Got approved for a great rate.. and signed the papers!
Then, I'm thinking I'm really done...but randomly checked a personal loan email and got prequal'ed for Auto Refinance and a personal loan.
Got approved for both! 27.5k and a 29k refi. Boom. Good rates too.
Here I am tonight...6/5 knowing that I'm dead..got 1/2 of the CC I wanted, but got the house, car, and some new credit. :-)
HOWEVER, I could get off NOT getting approved for the Marriott Amex. I travel a bit and like staying at Marriott properties. Well, fortunately enough, I looked and stumbled into AMEX and saw I was "pre-qualified" for the Business version of Marriott (speculating that maybe they liked business cards more than personal)...
I applied and hot dang! Auto-Approved for $3k.
Took another stab at Delta Reserve with another DBA of the business: Ding ding, winner winner! $4k Auto-approved.
And, I submitted the Chase apps prior to the AMEX apps and they are "under review" right now.
In Summary:
Personal: 2 of 6 approvals (1 pending)
Business: 3 of 4 approvals (all AMEX, decline from USBank and 1 Pending)
5 of 10 isn't horrific. But, not what I wanted from the personal side. We'll see how the Chase ends.
I bank with them (Pers and Biz) and hope that the activity, high daily balances and deposits help (even though they say they don't look at that...I call BS).
My Question for you:
Did I do as good as I could've with the CC apps?
Considering that the Home, Car, refi and other cards HAVE NOT posted to the account...am I dead with apps now?
Any juice left? Or do I leave it alone now? And take my 2 year hiatus?
(Side note: I didn't have any new CC in last 2 years, so I think the 5/24 should be good with Chase as they review)
I'll update yall on the final 2 apps.
Love to hear your feedback! :-)
It sounds like you won yourself a ticket to the garden for at least 6 months, but I'll let the veterans here chime in with more detailed thoughts on your strategy and timing. Congrats on the house, car, and cards. And a bigger congratulations on climbing your way back up in CS.
Congrats on the house! I love hearing that! Congrats on the spree too. I would say you did very well all things considered. I would stop now, though, while you’re ahead. You don’t want to risk AA. I would hit the garden with your shiny new cards.
I didn't know Chase did the "Whatcha doin" SP. That's crazy. smh.
I have plenty of income from 2 different sources. So, I know that helps me a lot (esp the house, car and personal loan).
But yeah, the after the fact looks to cancel a card? That's brutal.

Rather than focus on the missed cards, I’m looking at all the success you’ve had, both with the acquisitions and the rebuild to put yourself in position for them - big congrats there
My word of caution will be to echo what is repeated almost daily on these boards although I’m going to only infer that you apped for Chase as I don’t see concrete wording that you did - in the midst of such an app spree, please don’t get your hopes too high on Chase. They don’t like approving among several other apps/approvals and those cards may be denied, or shut down shortly after approval when Chase does their famous “whatcha doin?” follow-up SP.
I hope you beat those odds and get them but if not, relax and enjoy what you’ve gotten and try again later.
Again, congrats on some major successes!

When you can land a house like that and a RangeRover, who needs credit cards lol. People always wsnt 800 ficos but look what you accomplished on your scores, scores are overrated. Great job but definetly slow down know. As stated Chase will sp and not like seeing multiple cc apps, a house, a car, personal loan, all at once. Citi , you could have applied for another card after 8 days not 30 days. Again enjoy your windfall , not many of us get to do so
Yeah, I feel good now. :-) I got several of the dream cards (didn't get the Double Cash or any Chase, yet).

What do you mean AA? Adverse action? In what sense?
