I tried the search function, but most of what I found was quite dated and I know that in recent times banks have been more conservative so I thought I'd check. I recently app'd for CSP, and in general I am targeting rewards toward international travel (in about two years) and would ideally like to build up some points good for hotel and airfare. I'm eyeing a couple hotel/airline/general travel cards, one or two of which are Chase products. Some are AmEx, etc.
I know for another Chase product I'd be best off to wait until the new card has aged considerably (I'm thinking 12+ months probably, and I am prepared to close one of the cards that just doesn't suit my needs any more to get a new line) - does that sound right? Do you have recommendations on how soon would be okay to go with a new card from another lender, such as AmEx? My gut feeling is 6+ months but I really want to optimize SUB's when tempting offers come along. I am not churning and it will all be organic spend, but I keep wondering how soon is too soon.
My file is mature, fairly thick, scores in the 800's if that plays into this at all. [Edited to add: Chase is the only app/inquiry in the past ~3+ years]
You would have to take into consideration which issuers you would be applying with due to sensitivites toward inquires and new accounts over the prevous 6/12 month period but right now if you have a relatively deep and thick profile you should likely be able to sustain a cadence of 1 card every 6 months with a very high success rate, 4 months if you're more aggressive and more willing to accept a somewhat higher rate of denials. You would not want to follow an every-4-month cadence with Chase as you would be pushing your luck.
Depending on the Chase card you are thinking of closing and your willingness to potentially forgo a SUB a PC may be a better alternative. If you do decide to close be sure to transfer most of the credit limit to a different personal Chase card first.
With fairly thick mature file, scores in 800's and no other inquiries for past 3 years except CSP. You can add another Chase card soon as you feel comfortable with it. 30 days to be safe then slow down.
I apply approx each 6 months for a credit card for rare exceptions like a new card being dropped to the market and it has a huge SUB, etc...
I thin k once in 6 months is safe bet!
