I was declined for Chase Freedom. Called and tried to recon - he stated he just couldn't get past my open tax liens.
I may try again, but it's probably not going to happen.

I highly doubt they will look past the tax lien. How much are they for? If it's for a really low amount you might be able to catch a nice analyst on a good day and that's a far cry at times.
I have a very large tax lien in my file, and I successfully reconned the Freedom the end of May. Sounds like the analyst just pulled up the first reason available.
is it still open? what's the status on it?

It was paid off in March, but still shows as open in my files. It's over 7 years old, though. That may be a factor.
Chase is just a PITA lender with retarded new account policies.
I was denied about 6 months ago for Freedom.. citing my 6 year old BK13 in which they were not included. Recon request for a $500 Freedom to get in the door... nope, still denied despite perfect history for 2 years on $5k-$10k cards.
In a matter of months when the Ch 13 falls off my reports they'll be throwing cards at me.
Chase sure is a tough cookie. They are very conservative and I had to beg pretty hard to recon from the initial $2,500 to $5k when I first got the card.
So I checked my Cap one prequal again after having Venture 1 (10K) and Quicksilver 1 (3K) for a month, I came up pre approved for Venture and Quicksilver.
I apped for Quicksilver (didn't want the AF on venture, and doubtful I'd hit the spend bonus) and was instantly approved for a 3K Quicksilver.
Hey, if Cap 1 loves me, I love them too. No need for more cards, and no need to apply anywhere else.
you have already wasted the 1, potentially 2 inquiries with chase. call them back at the EO. I reconned twice with them yesterday for my IHG/Hyatt apps. Super rude.
Then today when my 2nd inquiry showed up, I called in. Super polite, her reasons and explanations were totally different than the previous reps...
And dont forget you can also do another recon that risks a further inquiry, where the EO will write you a letter with their response. At least that was my case last december.
I know credit can change fast...but seriously chase, 6 months ago there is no reason why you would deny me twice for the freedom...then later on approve me. I firmly believe it was all to do with the reps I delt with in december, yesterday, and today.
KEEP CALLING!
