I'm considering applying for an American Express card. In this case there's a possibility that I would be excluded from the SUB, since I did once have an earlier version of the card.
I am aware that Amex usually informs you if you do not qualify for the SUB, and gives you the option of withdrawing your application. But does it always do that? Is it safe to rely on that process?

The pop up is very reliable. If you are concerned, take screenshot that shows you weren't given not eligible for SUB language.

They will allow a SUB if each card is in a different credit card grouping. That is, travel cards versus reward cards are grouped internally differently. So, just choose one from a different grouping.
I got a BCP 3/22. I got an offer 5/22 for a Delta plat skymiles- so I called with just that question. It was approved and I have cash rewards/Sub on the BCP and travel reaards/SUB on the delt.
That being said, they may still give you a SUB to you if it was a long time ago- but I think that decision is based more on your profile.

I'm not concerned now that you've told me it's very reliable ![]()

It's just one specific card that I'm considering.

I got a Delta Skymiles in 2014 with a SUB of like 50k miles... got the same card in 2022 with a SUB of 75k miles and $100 flight credit.

Understood: just saying that to be safe if you had a travel before go for a rewards now- and Vice versa

Should be pretty reliable. Sub depends on how long ago you got it. I believe 5 years is when you may be eligible again. I don't remember what happened with the gold, so I don't know if that will affect anything.

I got the older version of the card around 6 years ago, and closed it around 4 years ago.

Good luck on getting a repeat SUB
