I have been hearing that banks like Chase dont like offering you a big limit card like the CSP until you have one like that already. I just thought of something. If I got a secured card with a 5k limit for a little while, would a bank like Chase "count that" and be more inclined to giving me a high limit kind of card? Or would they not count that because its secured? I just thought of that idea and it has me thinking that that might be a good idea to try and do if they would consider that a big limit card
I can't speak to Chase specifically but this is a strategy lots of people have used to prompt lenders to give them higher limit cards. It's called creating a prybar and it works. The comment about the card being secured (which may or may not be present) would not come into play unless your file is referred for manual underwriting. To a computer a high limit is a high limit. Go for it and report back.
I did this with my first card post BK7, which was the OpenSky secured Visa. I had it at $200 for like a year and then I put in the maximum deposit they would allow over the last few months. I think it ended at 5K. I then applied for unsecured cards and got 10K limits on my first two apps -- Capital One and Care Credit. When I got those cards I closed OpenSky and they returned my money within a week through the ACH.
Ok great, thanks! How long were you using the secured card before the high limit cards?
I was a slow learner because I hadn't found this site and a few other helpful credit sites -- so I had just the one card for one year after my BK filing. I did open a share secured loan at my credit union but those were the only two things reporting on my reports.
