Hi everyone,
I am in the process of rebuilding my credit, and have had mix acceptance for some cards I have applied for.
My recent denials: Discover IT, Capital one Quicksilver Visa Sig (recon in progress, waiting on call back)
My recent approvals: Capital One Platinum $1k SL; Amazon Store Card $3.5k SL; Amazon Chase Rewards $2k SL
My profile: My scores are in my sig. I have two baddies, one paid and another unpaid that are both about six years old (luckily my baddies weren't cited as a reason for denial). I have student loans that have been paid on time for the past year, and a CLOSED (it has been closed for about four years) Fifth Third account with a $1.1k balance out of $2.2k limit.
I am calling again soon, either today or tomorrow. My question is how should I approach this recon? Should I call the EO number and try there next? Or should I call the standard recon number and try there one more time before calling EO?
Also, how should I strategically talk to them to encourage an approval. I can literally pay off my Fifth Third card now.
Apologize for the long post, but hopefully I can glean some insight from this community. You guys (ang gals) typically never fail.

- I apped for Chase Freedom yesterday (the same day I apped for Amazon Chase Rewards)
- I got the 7-10 message
- I immediately called the standard recon department
- She took a look and said I was denied because I was approved for Amazon Chase Rewards already for that day and that she would like to see my pay down my Fifth Third card. I told her I have the money to pay it off in my Chase savings account. Anyways, ended the call with no recon.

- Should I pay off my Fifth Third card today and call them back and let them know? I use my Chase bill pay so they should be able to see a payment sent.
- Should I offer a partial balance transfer if I am offered the Chase Freedom?
- Should I tell them I already paid it (I'm not insinuating lying. Just trying to expedite the approval within the 30 day app period for Chase. If that gets me the card I'll pay it immediately.)

Hello, I think you should pay it off the 5th card. You said you have recent approvals, how recent are they? What is your current AAOA? And how recent are your denials as well? You might have just app'd for too many things in a short period of time and this might not be able to be saved.
All my recent approvals / denials are this month / late last month. She didn't say I have too many inquiries. Just that I was approved for the Amazon Chase Visa that day so that was the initial denial.
So you think I should pay off the Fifth Third and call them back? They would have to take my word for it since I wouldn't want a second HP done…I'm not sure my AAOA. Does AAOA only relate to open revolver accounts? Or do closed revolver / credit card accounts factor into AAOA. Also do student loans count in the calculation for AAOA? Either way, new accounts were not the reason for the denial.
While the balance on the 5th card might be an issue I think your main issues are twofold; your scores are borderline for Chase approvals and you opened the one Chase account. More than likely they are going to want to see some history with the Amazon card before approving you for a second card.
Good luck with the recon.

I understand those factors you pointed out, and if that they did not exist I would have been instantly approved. Still, my question is how to approach the recon and deal with the cards I currently have been dealt (no pun intended). I also understand odds of recon may not be entirely favorable, but I think it's still has an okay chance. Any thoughts on how to approach from the options in my first post?

Call back and offer to have them move some limit on your current Chase card to open the Freedom. Tell them it is a card that really fits your needs hence the offer to move limit . Keep us posted on how it goes..

Honestly it is going to be a tough recon with your scores and your current line-up. The biggest thing is chase already extended you credit that day.
I guess though if I was to approach is to point out your positive in your profile and figure away to negate the negatives and have planned answers that show you in a better light when they ask them to you.. Such as being ready for the 5th account why your balance is high, etc..
I have never had luck with chase recons, although with Barclay's it has been easy.. People have just the opposite experience from me and think Chase is easy to recon..
Anyways, best of luck

When you do a recon you really have to follow the lead of the analyst. If they are bringing up the Fifth account then you have to tell them that you will pay it off but usually they want to see the balance on your credit reports first. There isn't any simple approach to a recon. All you can say is that you're really interested in the card and want to build a relationship with them. It's difficult to overcome the objection that they want to see history with the one account prior to approving a second. While it's too late now your better approach would have been to apply for the Freedom first because you already have the Amazon store card. But that's in the past and all you can do is try again and see if you make progress with a different analyst.
Credit is a marathon. I think you should head off to the garden for 6 months, let your new cards mature.
After the 6 months, Chase will most likely approve you for the freedom card and give you a much higher limit that you would get to today.
Do you really want a wallet full of toy limit prime cards, sure they look nice, but will they meet your needs without the constant threat of reporting maxed out because you charged your bills at the wrong time. Or had a slight emergency.

You make a valid point. I just wanted one more card before I headed to the garden. I could recon and if I'm successful see what they offer. What do you consider a toy limit? And couldn't I also garden after/if I get the Freedom and in 6 months get potential CLIs after they see I use my card a lot and PIF? Or you're saying I'll be stuck with my initial limit?
