It isn't that uncommon actually. My first card was an Amex and all I had was a used car loan. I think the issue nowadays is that the cards everyone wants are the ones that Amex is pulling tight with, because they have the better rewards.
I'd say wait until at least your 6 month point before going for another card. After your 1 year mark, you can start going for a Chase card as well (or at the 6 month point if you bank with them, but may be a low SL of $500). After 61 days, you can 3x CLI your Amex to $3k, so that should help you out.
