Re: Should I go for one more?

Just got approved for two cards this month, and was kinda wondering if I should try for one last card before gardening. My wife and I are trying to get our scores up as high as possible over the next 2 years so we can apply for a mortgage and get out of the shoddy place we currently rent for $1100 a month. Any input on what card would have the highest chance of approval? I'm currently iffy about Synchrony as I already have 2 with them and don't want a blue envelope.

I just want to point out 2 things from your post:

1.  "Getting your scores high" does not correlate with getting more credit, especially since you already have more than the required 3 for optimal scoring. "Getting scores higher" is equated with not applying for any more credit, which reduces your AAOA and increases your inquiries.

2.  Since we dont have any DPs, it's difficult to say what cards you or DW would have the highest chance of approval.

Also, IMHO, now is a good time to garden if your plans are to look into getting a mortgage in the next 12 months.

Re: Should I go for one more?

I see; I had no idea that 3 was optimal. I was using the credit simulator on an app and it had me believing that more is better. I had my parents use my identity from birth until 19, and they destroyed my credit. Since starting my rebuild, I've been obsessing over getting higher and higher. I guess it overrode my better judgement. I am still goaling to get into the 800 club, but I'll try to be a little more patient with the process. Thank you all for your input and advice; I'll be going into the garden now for the next 24 months.

I am not sure what the optimal number of cards is.....if that is the case a lot of people here are way over!...good advice to garden and let your CL grow.  If you have the itch bad and qualify for a Navy Fed membership I think that may be a good option.  They are pretty liberal with SL also...you have some good cards
