Re: Starting to see Applying is Addicting!!!!

Yup its very easy to get addicted.

I caught myself before it got bad. A year from now I hope to be pushing an 800 credit score and to do that I HAD to add credit cards to my profile which I did Smiley Happy

I feel like I will be getting rid of 2 cards soon.

Im not big on paying an annual fee on the CSP due to my low spend.

It can be addicting but eventually you will plateau and start getting hit with low limits, high APRs, and denials. Chasing every penny in rewards by opening a bunch of cards gets to the point of not being worth it unless you are spending an exorbitant amount of money every month. Otherwise, keep it simple. Less is more IMO.

Credit card addiction can be just as bad as any other addiction. It's fine to consider it an interest/hobby to maximize rewards, but when you start apping for everything under the sun you know you've got problems.

OP, you are rebuilding from some sort of significant credit issues in the past. You have three cards with good rewards and annual fees. While you can get new cards, often with annual fees, and that may be a choice you make, at this stage, you need to start really looking closely at the cards you do have, and doing the detailed calculations on your spend to see whether you really will see any benefit from any other cards.

Given you have three travel cards, each with a different type of travel redemptions that don't really work well together, this analysis of how your travel cards will work with your spend is a critical step you should take time to do now. Chase UR points don't play with AMEX MR points, because the redemption partners are nearly all different. Many people find the Capital One Venture points easier to deal with.

Yes, the apping can be addictive, and each person has to make their own decisions, but it's best to formulate a long term plan that each app should align with.

Yes, Im very much interested in Travel reward cards, and Im new to the game. I got all 3 cards for the bonus points and trying to figure out, in a year who will be the best card for me. Im still trying to figure out how bonus points and miles work toward trips, thats why I got all 3 from different companies, so I can make my decision at the end of the year, before the AF hits.  I definitely dont plan on keeping all the cards, Im using the Amex PRG to gateway to a revolver one day, for me the AF is not worth it to me.

^ Exactly.

So many people just app for cards without really doing the math to see if the benefit is even substantial.

For example: someone may have a Double Cash for daily spend. Then they have an AARP for dining at an extra 1%. A BCE for an extra 1% on groceries. etc.

Even if you spend literally a thousand dollars on dining and groceries on those other two cards, it's an extra $10 a month, but now it's spread across different reward programs! And in BCE's case, you cannot even redeem until $25.

The point is that sometimes it's not worth having so many cards and spreading the spend. Pick a program you like, whether it's points or a certain cash back system, and stick to it. Concentrate most of the spending there. Even if you are not getting the absolute highest percentage on every category, you will make up for it with simplicity and less hassle.

You make a very good point!

Re: Starting to see Applying is Addicting!!!!

Applications themselves aren't addicting (And if it is, seek help), but the rewards from their potential results are. Such as fine vacations for pennies on the dollar, or for some: A little extra holiday money.

Sometimes its hard to draw the line.  Gotta remember everyone is at different places in their lives.  One may get several approvals, then start seeing denials. The reason for the denials may be that they are applying for banks slightly out of their scope, not due to adding too many new accounts.  Chase denied me on ihg/hyatt due to short history. Then after several recon calls I was able to get IHG approved.  Now in retrospect had I let both sit and process they both probably would have been approved. The only thing that bothers me in my lineup are the APR variations.  Why I would go from 13.9 at citi to 22.9 at BOA (considering it was a joint app with someone w/ 800's).  I suppose I could have stopped at the first denial with chase, but my scores just kept increasing with each approval.

CreditOne $850 19% 4/2014

Commerce Bank Visa $2k 15.24% 9/2014

Cap1 QS $3.5k 12/2014 24.99%

AMEX ED $5k 17.99% 5/2015

AMEX Delta Gold $2k 15.99% 6/2015

Citi DoubleCash WMC $2.4k 13.99% (0% for 18) 7/2015

Chase IHG WMC $5k 15% 7/2015

BOA Amtrak WMC $2.1k 22.99% 9/2015

I am not having any trouble managing my cards. A bookmarks bar in chrome makes that easy. Also since most purchases are paid the same day.  It is hard to slow down apping though. I like the corner I have carved myself into lol. I wouldn't go out of my way to make just $400 from barclays or capital one (although barclays is tempting, yet scary).  I wont push my luck with citibank on a premier after only 60 days of being with them. I honestly dont think there is a single bonus out there I would easily qualify for right now anyway. Right???? Haha.  Ready for some time to elapse to get out of these 2k limit cards! Kudos to me for not applying for a single card in August!

Thank goodness for small business saturday lol. And black friday! (sorry to you guys and gals in retail)  And also discover double cash back.  Those are neat perks to tide me over. Very curious about this net spend premier though. I know one bank that would laugh at me....US Bank!

That Credit One card sticks out like a hobo in a Ritz-Carlton, though.

LOL I know I know, but its paid up until next march...and every time I call to cancel they have paid me to stay! I am happy they added 1% at grocery stores. They need to lower that AF tho'.  Its not like when I apply for new cards they look at that and get scared. They could still see it on my report if it was closed anyway, right? lol.

They could use well from a grace period, well, their customers anyway. Interest on Interest on Fees and Interest is too profitable for them I guess.

Re: Starting to see Applying is Addicting!!!!

Applying for credit cards in it self is more of an addiction to me than actually using them. That is where my mistakes come down the road. i.e., too much available credit.

I have a plethora of cards that I just wanted to apply for and put no use to them. I can manage several types of loans, credit cards, bills etc. I can also restrain myself  from using all my credit but im not doing myself anything really good by having so much credit because when I really, really, really want a card. It will probably be the worst time for me to actually get it.

The hardeat part is fighting the "Congratulations, You have been Approved" message... when you are feeling the need for a pick me up. for me at least.
