Has anyone here ever apped for a store card just for a one-time promotional discount on a large purchase?
I understand that no two profiles are alike but would doing so generally hurt an otherwise prime credit file?
Any and all thoughts on this are certainly welcome...

How big a discount are we talking here? Because while I wouldn't normally advocate someone getting a card to just use a promotion, if the amount saved is big I would just see it as a churner getting a card solely for the signup bonus which I can relate to.

I'm looking at a $500 discount (20% on $2500 spend) available one day only with the Synchrony store card (which I would immediately PIF).
I would say if you're profile looks good otherwise and doesn't have a ton of inquiries, that would be worth it to me. That's a decent savings.

Agreed.

Many thanks!
The funny thing is, I went into the store with my shopping list fully prepared to pay for everything with another card...until the sales clerk gave me the heads-up on this upcoming promotion. I'm sure there are some who will take advantage of this offer only to pay the 29.99% stated on the Synchrony Application.
To better inform you it would be best if you told us your profile scores AAoA etc. To see if youd get possible approval. And also what that SL might be .Because sure you may get approved but it may only be a $300 SL knowing Sync. So what card is it you're looking at?

Fair enough, Roy21...thanks for replying.
AAoA is about 3.8 years (five new accounts in the past two months); EQ=758/3; TU=727/5; EX=747/4.
So, that said...would it be better to apply in-store (and hope for an EX HP) or online for a likely TU HP?

I did this, but not intentionally. I was approved at the register for the Williams Sonoma Visa, and used the temp card that day to save a few hundred dollars on my purchases.
I got the alert from MyFICO telling me Comenity had closed the account before I received the physical card. So I guess it was an app for a one-time purchase
