Hello All!
So, I'm in the process of executing my next phase of my credit plan. I recently applied for some cards -- some approved, some denied. I also closed one card (a secured that had an annual fee that was coming up) that I no longer needed. I'm in a pretty good spot; I've been gardening, focusing on maintaining my reports and instituting a payment and card use schedule that allows for AZEO.
One of the interesting effects of the effort I've put forth on my credit plan has been an increase in the prequalifications/preapprovals I get in the mail. I read them; I ignore them. But two came today that I'd like to get some feedback and collective wisdom on. I'm going to post about one offer I got here; I'll post about the other I would like some feedback on in other thread.
One of the cards I am interested in, but I didn't apply for because I'm nervous about how finicky Synchrony is, is the Walmart store card. I applied for an Amazon store card account and was turned down by Synchrony for it. I now realize the Amazon card is harder to get than other Synchrony cards, such as the Walmart card -- but, still, it has me a bit gun shy.
I received a preapproval in the mail about the Walmart store card from Synchrony yesterday. Since it's one of the cards I am interested in, I wonder: Should I apply for it now -- rather than wait until the next round of apps I planned to include it in? Is it better to take advantage of a pre-qual/pre-approval when it pops up?
I do shop at Walmart, so this card makes sense for me and it is one that I would use. Right now, my credit card line up looks like the following:
NFCU GoRewards 2000
Discover It Gas & Restaurants 1500
Ollo Platinum 1000
Amex CashMagnet 1000
Target 2000
Overstock 250
Wayfair 1300
My profile looks like this:
Scores current in signature.
Current INQ's 6 to 9
2 or 3 baddies.
AAoA 8 to 9 years
2% UTL.
I have some room on my Transunion for a couple more inquiries, I think -- and Synchrony pulls from them. Is this something to consider? Or not worth bothering with now, because the PreQual isn't likely to mean I'll actually be able to get the account, based on my current situation?

Personally, I wouldn't get it. Purchases on Walmart's website will only get you 3%, in-store purchases are only 1% CB. Based on that alone, I wouldn't get it. I would recommend instead going for the Paypal 2% CB MC, as that's 2% everywhere, regardless of store. Since it's Synchrony as well, it'll pull from TU as well.
Also, I see that you have 3 other store cards, if you are using all of them, that's fine. If not, I would trim down if you aren't. I know a lot users have used the SCT trick to add more cards but I'm a firm believer in getting what you can use and benefits you.
I actually do shop at Walmart, though -- from a rewards perspective, it's not a great card, sure. But like I do with Target, having a Wal-Mart card allows me to divide up my spending by the places I actually spend my money -- I'm loyal that way. I like saying "bought stuff at Wal-Mart, have to pay the Wal-Mart card." Makes it really easy to track spending and pay my bills: Plan my purchases, go into my Quicken, buy my stuff, pay the bill before the card reports.
I'll keep Target, for sure (I shop there; prices are competitive with Wal-Mart on everyday goods; plus, it's local and I get great coupons and discounts through the Redcard -- highly recommend). Overstock and Wayfair, I shop at for things occasionally, but I mostly keep to allow them to grow their CLI. I'll keep Wayfair, though; I like their stuff and they recently increased my CL, so I can buy things I need there and not pay shipping. If I had to drop a card, though? It would be Overstock, because the SL is low and I won't hassle myself with it if I can't purchase things there without paying the shipping. If it doesn't increase soon, it's probably not worth keeping. But it's newer -- is it going to hurt me dropping it so fast after accepting it?
Question on your idea on the PayPal, though: Do you think the Walmart pre-qual is a harbinger that I might be considered for the PayPal from Synchrony? I thought the PayPal CB MC was harder to get. It might be a little too ambitious for me at this point, maybe?
Thanks!
Of course YMMV, but I got approved for the Paypal 2% card last year with a TU score of 639 I believe. I still had 3 unpaid chargeoffs reporting on TU. It was actually my fifth Synchrony approval last year (2 in May, 2 in August and the Paypal in September). Your scores in your signature are significantly higher than mine was. My SL was the same as it is now, I haven't requested cli's as my scores haven't really increased significantly since approval. Best of luck on whichever card you decide on.
i would apply. but be careful walmart and alot of synchrony cards are going to experian pulls. ymmv.

I definitely understand the loyalty portion. But, unless you're purchasing on Walmart.com where you get the 3% CB benefit, purchasing locally in-store isn't worth the rewards. Target with 5% is definitely worth it, the Wayfair since it's useful to you, I would keep, the Overstock, I would SD if you don't use it, possibly give it a few months and cancel if it's of no use. I still stand by my post earlier with the Paypal 2% CB MC, it can be used anywhere, it's a standard 2% CB on everything. Unless it's something like Target where the store card is better, I would still recommend the Paypal card. As far as UW goes, as DP's show, people with lower scores then yours were approved so IMHO, I think you'll get approved for it but as always YEMV. Either way, if I were to apply, I would go for the Paypal vs. the Walmart card.
