Synchrony...yeah another one

I'm sorry to add to the many Synchrony threads but here I am.

I'm moving next month into a really nice apartment, and I could really use some new furniture. Not a need but a really strong want. Most of the furniture stores around here use Synchrony as the credit card/primary lending servicer. From reading through some of the threads, they pull TU which is my highest score but I tried to apply for the Marvel card (pulls TU) and got denied. Tried to recon but still got a no. I don't think I asked the right questions. I was approved for an Old Navy card (Synchrony) with a SL of $300 back in June and I have my Cap One Platinum card with a $300 SL that I got a few weeks ago. As far as my baddies go, I have 3 open collections, 1 judgement (shows on 2 out of 3 of my credit reports), and the number of inquiries I have as of today are EX: 8, TU: 4, EQ: 5. I know Synchrony is a hot mess right now but it seems to be the preferred credit company of so many places. The alternatives are Snap Finance and Acceptance Now which is basically like highway robbery. I have a unsecured loan at my CU that will be paid off in December and I'm thinking about asking for an increase in the loan. Although I was really looking forward to having that paid in full, paid on time installment loan jump on my credit report/score.

Anyway, back to Synchrony. Any advice on how to "get in" or does anyone know if they're doing any new CC approvals and recons right now.

Much appreciated!

I think your scores may still be a little low still for the Marvel card and the baddies don't help. I'd check the credit pulls database and and data points on approvals here before wasting any other HPs. I don't think Sync touched me for non-store cards until I hit 670-675.

Have you thought about trying the SCT maybe for Wayfair? They have decent furniture with special financing offers with their card.

Re: Synchrony...yeah another one

My scores are mis 650's, started out with a Capital One $500 Secured Card for about a year and Wells Fargo $1,000 for about 4 months.

The past month I have gotted these cards from Syncrony:

WalMart Approved $800, CLI to $5,000 after getting card

JCPenney Approved $500, CLI to $5,000 after getting card

Amazon Approved $1,500, CLI to $5,000 after getting card

Marvel Mastercrd (Really Suprised I got approved for it) Approved $2,500, CLI to $6,000 (Offically my highest non store card)

I applied for a ebates card bu looks like I got denied (7 - 10 day message)

I would advise to garden for a little while and let your accounts and INQ. Age and scores improve....I would not apply for anything else at this time "wanting"something and NEEDING, sometimes has to be put into perspective.

Fico 8's TU 756/ EQ 754/ EX 743- 8/2020// AAoA 5.7 years // Lines August 2020 = 619k Personal - Business 61k // Inquiries 6 TU - 0 Exp - 0 Eq.

Others have given great advice about waiting, etc. but I'll only add that like one of the others has already stated, Synchrony MC/Visa products have a higher bar than their store cards (generally speaking).  There have been a few reported Marvel approvals with scores in the 670-ish range (IIRC) but generally speaking for a Synchrony MC/Visa the closer to 700-710 your TU is the better your chance will be.  Synchrony also seems to not be as 'forgiving' with current baddies with their MC/V cards as they are with their store cards.

If you were to decide to move forward with applying for a furniture account, you might be approved but it might be with a low credit line.  Depending on what you want to buy and the terms of the promotion (I'm assuming that's why you would consider using a furniture card to begin with, otherwise the APR will be prohibitive) you might not get a credit line large enough for your purchase, anyway.

Of course this is speculation, and the only way to know for certain is to apply... which if denied will lower your score even further.  This is why most people are suggesting you to hold off a bit.

Good luck no matter what you decide!  Smiley Wink

Sync didn't let me in until my baddies fell off. I would wait and not apply for their cards right now.

Like you said it's a want not a need..

Re: Synchrony...yeah another one

Hey, I feel your pain OP. I moved recently and wanted to refurnish. I *could* go charge the dining room table and chairs that I want but I'm saving the cash for it and will put it on my card (for the rewards) when I have the money to PIF in a couple months.

IMO I was about where you were when I started rebuilding (2 judgments, a few open collections, low 600s) and too many apps and new accounts that I probably don't have the score increase I could have realized by now. So I'm in the garden til February 2018. My reports will be clean by then. Since your accounts are fairly new, I would give it 6 months minimum. The Cap One should grow a bit in that time, the loan will have more positive payments, you can start working on removing those collections, etc.

Thinking of credit as a tool to fulfill wants often leads us into the dark hole of credit problems and debt. Wait until you're in a better position.

Capital One Savor: $6,000; Mission Lane: $4,500; PenFed Power Cash Rewards: $3,500; Nordstrom Visa: $3,300; Capital One: $2,550

Store/Other: Care Credit $7,500; Kohls $2,500; Home Depot: $1,500; Amazon: $1,000; Target: $1,100; LOFT: $700
