Target Card Worth It?

Hi y'all!

Currently gardening for a few more months, but have been thinking for a while. Currently at college, where, when not eating out, I shop at two nearby stores: A grocery store and Target.

I have my Amex BCE for 3% @ grocery stores, so I'm covered there, but about $1.5K of annual spend at Target is currently only getting 2% on my Citi DC.

Let me preface this question by stating I absolutely hate Target, but since they are my only option for food shopping nearby, they have my business. I would prefer Walmart any day.

I will be in college for another 3 years, and therefore, will be loyal to Target for at least another 3 years. Should I apply for either the Credit Card or the Debit card from them for the 2-Day delivery benefit and the 5% back (I obviously don't need the extended return perk, I'm buying food Smiley Very Happy)? I have been reading up, and may consider the debit card since it appears to be a SP and won't lower my AAoA.

Open to all opinions! Thanks! Especially regarding if the debit card is worth it, if y'all think the credit card isn't.

In my opinion, you're 20. Taking the minor hit to your credit to get an automatic 5% off at a store you will already be shopping at is a no-brainer. Are you planning on applying for any loans in the near future?

Why not just the debit card if they still offer it?  Never shopped at target myself, but doesn't it offer the same 5% off as the CC?

Yes it does, and no bills to worry about. Also, I had no idea we have an extended return policy. In gonna have to look into that.

Just curious, why the Target hate? Target is a great alternative to Walmart.

The Target debit card is a great suggestion!

Re: Target Card Worth It?

I have the debit version of this card, and just yesterday applied for the credit version of this card.  It's under review so I'm hoping I'll get approved (been working on rebuilding my credit and it just recently got to the point where I felt I could take the plunge and go for it).  The debit version you should definitely go for if you choose not to apply for, or get denied for, the credit card version.  This way you can get the benefits the Target RedCard offers.

In your situation, let's look at some of the pros and cons of credit version.

Pros: one more positive thing on your credit report (if managed responsibly).  Also, can tie you over if you need food or something else until payday.

Cons: if you're only planning on shopping there for 3 or so years, this probably means you'll end up closing the card or letting it sit until they close it due to inactivity.  If this is what you plan on doing, your score will take a hit.

If you don't need the credit (in a situation to tie you over until a payday or needing a bigger item to pay for over time), then I just recommend you get the debit card version, this way your score and history don't take a hit when you're done shopping at Target after college.  The debit and the credit versions have the same everyday benefits (like save 5%, free two-day shipping on their website, etc.).  Let us know what you decide!

Personally, I like Target fine, but it's a bit too far away for me to casually go every weekend, unlike Walmart which is literally down the street from me. If not for that, I'd certainly be considering the Redcard for next year.

Re: Target Card Worth It?

For an update, y'all convinced me to apply for the Target Debit card.

However, near the end of the application, they asked me how I wanted to verify your bank account. I chose to sign into my Capital One Checking account to instantly verify, rather than wait 3-5 business days for a deposit. Target stated "Capital One wants you to verify you identity. Please choose which phone number you wish to receive a verification text to." However, on that screeen, I could see my phone number listed, but my clicks weren't registering to select the number (it was a weird website error). The application eventually timed out after a 90 second timer ran out, and it said "You will have to verify manually since you did not select a phone # to verify with."

I clicked Target's built-in"Back" button (not the browsers), and a message popped up saying it would terminate my application. I thought, "Okay, sure. I'll just re-enter my information really quickly and try the phone # verification again. Low and behold, I run back through the application, but to my surprise, I was greeted with a 7-10 day message rather than a bank account verification screen! Their fraud system must have picked up two applications (even though it was only one and I formally cancelled the other!), so I am left waiting.... :/1.png

As for why I don't like Target (excluding this application issue), I find them pricier than Wal-Mart, I like Wal-Mart pickup features, and absolutely love Walmart Pay at checkout (makes checkout insanely fast, and makes receipt storing ridiculously easy).

As a side note, when I saw the 7-10 day message, I immediately freaked out, assuming I had clicked Credit instead of Debit! Smiley Very Happy

Re: Target Card Worth It?

Good luck with this!!! I agree with Target being much more expensive than Walmart too. I always spend double what I would spend at Walmart on food shopping!

Re: Target Card Worth It?

I have had the debit version for only a few months. Not a single complaint! Plus no effect on my credit. With all the benefits remaining the same.
