Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

Stop coming by this forum as much...find something else to do.  As strange as it may be, that's honestly what has helped me.  This forum and the fine folks here are a wealth of information and has helped me tremendously in my journey.  But, when I finally decided that I was done chasing increases and app'ing for new card, I stopped coming here as much.  When I don't think about or spend my time with like minded folks (regarding credit) it wasn't to terribly hard to let it go.  The first few weeks were hard because I had the temptation check out the forum from my cell phone or while I was at work...but once I finally let it go and started doing other things besides coming home and plopping in front of the computer to read this site for hours on in, the urge and itch slowly faded away.  In April I applied for NFCU because I heard that the window of opportunity was closing and I wanted to have them around long term and like we all know, that window did close and I'm happy I decided to pull the trigger when I did.

Now I have no desire to add any additional cards or increase my limits as they're far greater than I can ever use and honestly, I can only spend on credit card as much as my salary allows...and the limits I have far exceed what I could reasonably pay back so there's no need for me asking for increases regardless of SP or HP.

Like it'd probably be a good idea for an alcoholic to avoid bars and folks who drink, avoiding this place and the folks that speak about credit all day should certainly help you to not think about credit limits and new cards.  I still pop on here every now and again...I'll answer a question if I can or comment if I have something to add...I don't read the Approval section too much because like I mentioned, it only serves to stir the thought of wanting an ask for an un-needed increase or another card that I don't need.  I do like to read the Auto Loan section when I'm on the forum because I enjoy reading about the new set of wheels that folks are picking up.  And because changing cars isn't as temping as it is to app for a credit card or increase, reading about others success doesn't even remotely make me want to buy another car.

Best of luck to you BBS...as you're not alone...I to had the same feeling as you and I was able to overcome it...and happy I did.  Worrying about which card to use, what limit to increase, the next card to app for, to pay or not to pay before the statement cuts, in its own right was a form of stress for me that I'm happy to not have to deal with anymore.

This is solid advice right here and I completely agree. Spend less time on the forum and the urge will vanish. If you are constantly reading credit discussions, the itch will not tend to go away.

Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

As for me, I think the only card right now that I have a really serious itch for getting a CLI on is my Amazon Prime Store Card, but that may be in part because I've been turned down twice so far, in March and May. I'm given to understand from other discussions, though, that Synchrony pretty much auto-denies CLI's for that card if you're under 650 TU (which really irks me because both EQ and EX are over that mark), so I guess the only thing to do is wait until TU goes over the magic 650 before trying again.  As for my other cards, Cap One unsecured Platinum and Discover IT have auto-CLI's due in the next couple of months, Cap One secured Platinum is done for CLI's, and I got such a good SL on my Overstock that I have no real urge to try for a CLI anytime real soon.

Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

Good post above.

I wouldn't say I'm addicted necessarily, as I defintely could stop at any point.  I really do enjoy "the game" though at this point.  That's really how I look at it presently... it's a game and like any game, it feels good when you "win" even if that feeling is short-lived and it's on to the next game.  I do definitely look forward to the day, hopefully within the next year, where I don't care any longer and don't desire to play "the game" since it definitely does take up time and effort when you're moving around spends, micromanaging, etc.

I do also think that coming off of a rebuild, many like myself may feel the sense of accomplishment a little more than others.  Especially if your low point wasn't long ago, maybe a year or two or slightly longer.  Every CLI that I get further distances me from those dark days and serves as a reminder, no matter how small or temporary, that I've overcome that time and am in a much better place today.

I've only been actively involved in pursuing CLIs for less than a year now.  Always SP CLIs, BTW, as I've never been willing to take a HP for one.

Like many on this forum, I don't really have any reason for CLIs at this point.  My limits are already far greater than I would ever need.  I never carry balances, so I have zero use for additional limits in terms of aiding aggregate utilization.  The only reason I seek out CLIs, near as I can tell, is because I can.  I guess I like the thrill of it and that sense of accomplishment when I get one.  I'm sure there are others in the same boat as me here.  It's kind of silly when I step back and think about it.  The thrill of getting the CLI and/or accomplishment felt may only last a few days.  Heck, sometimes just a few hours.  Yet for some reason, it's worth it.

It's become more of a game to me I suppose at this point.  Trying to figure out the best way to get a CLI (and the best CLI) based on spend/payment patterns, timing, etc.  I find myself constantly moving my spends around from one card to another when I know a CLI opportunity is approaching in a few months.  I probably miss out slightly on rewards as a result, at the expense perhaps of a greater CLI opportunity.  I find myself once I receive a CLI on a card that I almost immediately start thinking about the next card that I'll be able to get a CLI on.

So, my question for everyone that's done this for over a year (perhaps much longer) is does the CLI itch ever go away?  I know some people are this same exact way with applying for new cards, which no doubt can get one in trouble more than just going for SP CLIs on existing cards... but I guess the overall concept and "itch" is similar.  I guess once one gets to the point where all of their cards are at their max CL relative to your profile and you basically can't get further CLIs, the "game" is essentially over?  Or, do you just get bored of it eventually?  Perhaps after a couple of years you just start getting tired of putting in the "work" of moving around your spend, micromanaging your accounts so much, etc?  Since I'm relatively new to the CLI game, I'm very curious to hear about this subject from those that have been involved in it longer than I have.

I'm done. I am just using my CL's and paying and working on that elusive 800 score. I have all the credit I want and really want to let those inquiries fall off. I lose six more this year.Yay!  I pretty much use my cards when I need them and carry a balance when I need to such as with my Promise card which has a 7.9 APR.

Now getting to this place was something else. I had the itch for new credit, the itch for CLI's and the itch for just about anything and everything. Smiley Tongue It really does pass at some point. I don't plan anything overwhelming for a couple of years while I use my cards and get the most value from them.  Good luck to you!

Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

To expand on my previous post, as some of you no doubt know, I've never wanted that many credit cards in the first place - I think my ideal portfolio is one or two each good rewards Visa/MC/Discover/Amex with an ample but not excessive CL ($10k would probably do me just fine) and a few store cards - Amazon and Overstock (which I have), Walmart (for which a pre-approval mailer is arriving in today's post), and Paypal Credit, maybe Care Credit as well. I think getting a Visa is the most important of these to me, so if that's successful and I get Walmart and/or Paypal as well, I'm probably done for the remainder of this year at least.

Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

Because my savings is so strong, I don't have any need for CLs that are more than my monthly spend.  I generally PIF a card the day charges post unless I know another charge is pending, then I wait until it posts.

My only goal is sign-up bonuses and rewards.  My annual spend is medium high and I hate knowing that for the past 10 years I didn't earn $0.01 in cash back or rewards.  Probably almost a million dollars in overall spend and I got $0 for it.

So now I will work on my FICO scores in order to qualify for premium sign-up bonuses, and prime rewards cards.  I am working on a spreadsheet to help me analyze which card (future or current) makes the most sense for every spend I have made and might make in the future.  That way, I can get all the money I left on the table.

My biggest annual spends every year are just a hair under $5000 for one charge.  So a $5k rewards card is perfect.  In the past 7 years I have had 9 spends between $5000-$10,000 for vacations but all of those could have been paid in two or three chunks, so a $5k rewards card works for me.  Since I'll never post an actual statement balance (except for the AZEO one), $5k is enough for now and I assume once I qualify for $5k, getting higher limits on demand shouldn't be too hard since I won't be pressing the luv button without needing it.

That being said, if I did rely on credit cards to cover large purchases over a period of time, I'd be seeking out 0% BT offers with very high limits so utilization would stay low-ish during the BT period.  I've never done a BT in my life and don't plan to, but on the flip side I wouldn't have any issue doing a 0% BT at up to 8.9% of the CL on one card and then stop worrying about my AZEO plans, lol.  A $25,000 credit limit card with a 0% BT offer for 18 months would mean I could throw $2225 on it at 0% and not have to play the AZEO game for 18 months!

One big issue for me is my monthly income from rental properties comes by the 5th every month but my real work income only comes 2-3 times a year in huge chunks, so I literally have to have a strong savings balances just to survive.  I once went 11 months without a paycheck (I was working, just deferred compensation work) and when that one hit it was gigantic, and I was thankful I had money in savings to survive that planned drought!  Also made over 20% extra for deferring compensation.  I love free money.

Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

I've obviously begun my descent down the churning slope but my goal in the next few years is to consolidate and trim down to a handful of $50-100k majors, keeping the store cards that actually do net me 5% or more savings (that is currently all of them), and then likely applying for flavors of the month every 6-12 months for sign up bonuses. With the exception of NASA (that 7.9% for life BT has been paid for a while now), CapOne (soon to be on chopping block) and Amex Blue, all of my cards are either used regularly or currently have a 0-4.99% balance transfer. While paying down my massive debt with BT offers and working on my "as close to $100k as possible" goals, I'm going to continue requesting CLIs so to answer the original question, for me the line is going to keep moving every time I think I can get a first down.

...AND, back to the topic at hand...

ABCD, I understand the seeking out of bonuses.  Do you find yourself ever pursuing CLIs on cards after you achieve those bonuses, or once you receive the bonuses do you sort of write them off and push them to the back burner?

Re: The CLI Itch: Does it ever end?

I'm still in FICO hell so no recent massive approvals lately. But in the past when I was super prime, I was a bonus chaser. I don't remember ever once asking for a CLI unless I had a card for at least a year AND had a good reason to want a bigger CL such as to make a purchase. We also didn't have the same kind of sign up bonuses we have today but there were some.

Once my scores are back in prime territory I can imagine being the same way. I just like free money versus free float. Interest wigs me out because I've been a lender and am a landlord and part of becoming both meant practicing a lot of patience. If I win in any category in life, it's how patient I am over waiting for what I really want.

I'm totally impatient in waiting for my SSL to report, tho, lol.
