Thinking ahead for NEXT year- Freedom app or Barclay's app first at that time?

Hi all,

Let me begin by saying I'm not applying for anything now. I know someone will get onto me. haha. Smiley Tongue

I'm getting chase prequals now for the freedom and slate.

Currently I have QS1 (1500 and in credit steps, so will increase) and secured cap 1 (551 limit). Both were opened in Dec. 14. I also have a small Amazon Prime Store Card (600) opened Feb.15.

Thinking of applying for third bankcard in maybe February of 2016. Two bankcards will be about 14 months old, some neg. will fall off, and accounts will age. I'm at about 5 years AAoA now. I know Barclay's likes a year of recent history so I feel like I'll be in good shape then. I'd really like the Freedom. I would only want Slate for the FICO and I have the 3B monitoring so not worried about it. Will just go Freedom from Chase. Also would like Barclay's Rewards MC or Apple.

When that time comes, should I app for Barclay's first and then accept the Chase prequal (assuming I have offers then too). If I could only get accepted for one, I would want the Freedom.

All I'm doing is rebuilding and want some cards I'll actually use. I know I need the third bankcard but want one I'll want to keep. Eventually want to get away from the AF now too (close secured one day and hopefully PC the QS1 to QS).  Will have paid my car loan off in about a year and a half and then will be saving that money to build up for sizeable down payment on new car (I'm aggressively paying loan between 800 and 900 a month). Have another student loan for installment in mix.  App for car wouldn't be in less than 4 years.

Thanks for suggestions and thoughts. Smiley Very Happy

Good thinking doing Barclay first, they're more sensative. I did this last month, got my Ring and then my Freedom seconds later. Good to have a plan. Rewards MC is better than Apple IMO, a lot of people feel the Apple becomes...less useful over time...when life priorities change. It happens.

Active Cards: Chevron Texaco, Amex BCE, Barclays Ring, Chase Freedom, Chase Freedom Unlimited, Best Buy Visa, Marvel MCMust garden until 2/1/2022 to hit my goal AAOA. Smiley Indifferent

I would second going for the Rewards over the Apple card. Unless you are a total Apple junkie, you're going to reach a point where you already have an Iphone, you already have an Ipod, etc and most people can't afford to upgrade every time a new version comes out. I just think the Apple card has limited use, and this is why you see a lot of people closing or PCing it around here. As someone said, priorities change.

With the whole priorities change point though, it's kind of hard to plan for next year. New cards come out constantly and existing ones are changed. Don't forget to check what's on the market when you are ready to apply -- maybe the Rewards card will be replaced with something better, maybe Freedom will be nerfed, who knows. Take it one day at a time.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Honestly I would rather have the Rewards MC. I will buy whatever Apple stuff I need outright. I just wanted an in with Barclay and thought those were more likely to approve me as I crawl back up to better credit.

Good call. Flexible "plans." I'm always watching what's going on and will make sure I react accordingly. I just won't be going into it without plenty of thought, that's all. See, I want my third card. I would also like in with Barclay. Since they are sensitive, I figured I could wait a little longer and go for them first.

Who knows how the wind will blow, however

It's a good plan of attack.

I got the Apple card in Sept 2013 with a 650 TU.  $1200 CL and used it for 16 months and got a $4500 Sallie Mae in December 2014 with a 665 TU.  I then moved the $2200 Apple CL over (got a $1000 CLI at 6 months) and closed the Apple.

My $6700 Sallie Mae is my go to card.

FICO8 current as of : 10-20-25 EQ: 736 TU: 728 EX: 722

Have you checked the Chase prequal?  I am also in the rebuilding steps after years of not using credit cards and Chase was the second place I went after obtaining my first card with BoA in beginning of the year and I was preapproved for the Freedom card so I gladly accepted!

Hi, yes I have Chase prequal for Freedom and Slate. Gives the specific APR and such. I think I'm on the lower end though as my Slate APR is the lowest of the the ones they offer on it.

Maybe it'll look different down the road a few months.
