Time to try for Wal-Mart again?

Brief history:

Have never had a Wal-Mart card, but shop there a lot for grocery and household items, as well as around the holidays.

Had one acct w/ JC Penney years ago that went into collections. (Small amnt--maybe $300.)  I believe I paid this, but through the second or third CA (was sold and re-sold before I could even catch up with it), and last I checked JCP still showed on my EQ report, but not my TU.  At the time, per my understanding, GECRB managed JC Penney.  GECRB is now Sync, correct?  (Not sure if that could potentially 'blacklist' me?)

I last app'd for a Wal-Mart card over 2 years ago (10/31/2012), and was denied.  The inquiry just fell off my TU report.  I am currently disputing a CA on my TU.  In doing so, I viewed my TU report (directly from TU).  I only had 6 inquiries on that report, including one by Barclay in December 2012, which will fall off in a few weeks.  (Side note: CK lists 12 hard inquiries... Which should I go by?)  And with a TU score in the range of 625-640, is it safe to maybe app for Wal-Mart again?

I should also maybe note that I currently have two Cap 1 cards--a secured w/ a $750 limit (only $49 of which is secured) that I've had almost 3 years, and a QS1 w/ a $1000 limit (just opened last month). Also got 2 Comenity cards recently via shopping cart trick--VS opened 2 mos ago-$250 CL/$0 balance, Brylane home opened this month-$500 limit/$0 balance.  My overall utilization is around 40%; AAOA is 7.2 years.

Any input it greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Starting Scores: EQ 542/TU 500/EX 513
Current Scores: EQ 611/TU 611/EX 628
Goal Score: All 700+

Cap One Secured ($750/$701 'unsecured'), Cap One QS1($1000), Victoria's Secret ($250), Brylane Home ($500), Amazon Store Card ($600)

You should be okay but expect a mickey mouse limit.

^^ yep. GE/Synchrony wants you to keep your utilization low (10% or less) and you can get an automatic CLI after the 4th statement cuts if you pay it off each month. The major benefit of the card is the 0% financing options that you get.

Re: Time to try for Wal-Mart again?

Heres my experience......back when I was 18 (11 years ago) after getting my first and only student loan I applied for a JCPenny card (my cousin worked there and she received some type of bonus if I applied and was approved) to my surprese I was approved for a little $300 limit. That same night I went online and applied for Walmart approved for $250....approved Target, Capital One, Kays and Victorias Secret all In the same night. Shortly after I was dumb and stopped paying and all my cards got charged off besides Kays ....since then I havent cared about my credit at all (until recently) I just gave up pretty much (I was also in a abusive marriage) I thought I ruined my credit 11 years ago and thought I would never have good credit. The only credit card that I managed to save was a Kays credit card that I always paid on time (no lates at all) and eventually closed because of non use which is still on my credit reports.

Fast Forward to April I got a Capital One Secured card! And in September I started really working on my credit. I have gone up 100 points for EXP and EQ and almost 150-200 for TU!

The charge offs from JCPenny and Walmart have of couse fallen off but I dont believe they were ever paid at all. I thought like you that I was probably blacklisted. I dont know what bank owned the cards back then but I just thought it was probably GE. Applied for Walmart 9/16 when I first started rebuilding (stupid mistake) with a TU of about 570 denied!! October 13th I had a TU score of 623 and tried Amazon.. owned by the same bank as Walmart...instantly approved for $800!!.......then tried for Walmart but was denied again. Wamart didnt pull my report again and it was not because I was blacklisted but because I just applied a month before. A rep had to push my app through and was Instantly approved for $500! Its not much and im hoping it will grow. Im just happy GE/Synchrony gave me a 2nd chance.

My TU was 622/623....I had 11 inq (most from before I started really building my credit because I didnt know any better) i sit firmly in the garden now and i have learned so much by my mistakes alread, about 3 new accounts and utilization was about 1% I honestly think you will be okay just be prepared to maybe get a low limit but from what I heard it will grow quick.

Good Luck with whatever you decide. Another reaosn I decided to go for Amazon and walmart because I shop at both places a lot. They were honestly the only store cards I wanted besides Victorias Secret (and Target but I will not even try to apply for that till 1-2 years). I am a mother to 5 so I do a lot of my grocery and household shopping at Walmart. I also wanted to apply now because of Christmas!

Re: Time to try for Wal-Mart again?

I'd say you'd be ok...Try the shopping cart trick first (they are one of the synch cards that do that).... Add a few items to your basket online, check out like normal and see if you get a " preapproval" pop up! If not try anyways since this a useful card to you and has the potential later down the road to be upgraded to the MC version.

Re: Time to try for Wal-Mart again?

Thanks for your input, everyone.  I went ahead and app'd for Wal-Mart--got the dreaded 7-10 day message. :-(

Will work on getting my scores up, and re-apply in the future (if I have the need).

Thanks again. :-)

Re: Time to try for Wal-Mart again?

Oh no!! Gosh, sorry for the possible denial. I say possible because it could be a security thing and the letter might want you to call in for verification. Synch does not recon, but there have been a few isolated occurrences that were successful on recon. You already took the HP for it, might as well call the back number and recon. Never ever hurts to recon!! Good luck
