To recon or not to recon?

So my brother app'ed for the Slate card. He has above 730 + Fico score, no derog, no missed payments, but only two credit cards which he is an authorized user of. One with a high limit and one that is less than 1k. Both have been open for 5+ years. He did not get approved as the reason was not enough deep credit. Is it worth to recon?

Definitely.

Re: To recon or not to recon?

There's no downside to calling and reconning. I don't think Chase is one of the issuers who wants a new HP to recon. May as well just call and ask. As long as there's no additional HP, why not?

Re: To recon or not to recon?

The answer to this question is always yes.

However, the real question I have, why the slate?  There are many better "first cards" out there than the slate.  Is he planning on opening a credit line to float a balance?  That's a dangerous game to play for someone new to credit.

Re: To recon or not to recon?

Because they have the best BT offer. Currently he is an authorized user on my account and has been for the past 5 yrs. He has been paying it every month, keeping the utilization low, and now wants to get his own card, so transfering the current balance seems like the best option, and Slate offers the best rate for it. Any recommendation on first cards if the recon does not work?

Re: To recon or not to recon?

Chase tends to not put a lot of emphasis on AU accounts so it might be a tough approval (he could try for like a $500 limit) with them. Cap1 could be a good start or a store card if there's a store he shops at a lot.

Quicksilver $10,000 | Better Balance Rewards $2000 | Sallie Mae $3500 | Freedom $3500

Callandra, you are abolutely correct. They could not overturn the decision when attempted to recon since he has only been an authorized user. So he apped for the Cap One Quicksilver card and was approved with a 10k limit. Not too shabby for his first card.
